Continuation of this temporary appointment is contingent upon grant funding.

Anticipated Hiring Range

$6,167.00 per month @ 1.0 FTE ($74,004.00 annually @ 1.0 FTE)

$2,467.00 per month @ 0.4 FTE ($29,604.00 annually @ 0.4 FTE)

Salary is commensurate with experience.

Position Summary


The California Deafblind Services (CDBS) Educational Specialist serves as one of four statewide project experts in the education of infants, toddlers, children and young adults who are deafblind. The Educational Specialist builds local and regional capacity for service delivery systems through the development, implementation and evaluation of technical assistance and training activities. In coordination with the CDBS Family Engagement Specialist and members of the CDBS Network of Family Support Providers, the Educational Specialist provides culturally-responsive services to families of children who are deafblind. The Educational Specialist represents CDBS at local, regional, statewide and national meetings and conferences. The Educational Specialist serves as a content resource to families, public and private schools, and public and private agencies.

Position Information

  • Serve as CDBS service coordinator for a caseload of infants, toddlers, children, and young adults who are deafblind and provide longitudinal technical assistance on-site and via distance technology to their families, and the schools and agencies that serve them.
  • Contribute to the body of knowledge specific to deaf blindness through the publication of articles, training materials, and the production of CDBS print and video products.
  • Deliver state and regional conference presentations that reflect current, research-based and evidence-based practices. Conduct content specific training activities throughout California, including local and regional training for LEAs and pre-service lectures at CSU campuses.
  • Serve as co-instructor for intervener training program using the Open Hands Open Access online intervener training modules.
  • Collect and analyze formative and summative project evaluation data.

Minimum Qualifications


General knowledge of administrative survey principles and techniques and skill in their application; general knowledge of principles of organization and management; thorough knowledge of the subject area of the assignment; working knowledge of statistical methods.
Ability to relate the overall objectives and policies of the Trustees, the Office of the Chancellor and the administration and faculties of the campus to analytical and research studies; ability to see the interrelationships within and among the various educational, administrative and fiscal programs on the campuses; sensitivity to the special needs of various campuses because of different size, location, characteristics and circumstances; ability to approach problems objectively; ability to present findings and recommendations clearly and diplomatically and to reconcile, to the extent possible, various divergent points of view; ability to utilize complex statistical and other types of research methods; ability to draw conclusions and develop recommendations, to prepare written reports, and to develop and level contacts including the leading of meetings and negotiations.
 
Experience:
Four years of progressively responsible administrative, technical, or professional analytical experience which demonstrates ability to conduct substantive surveys and studies of problems and issues in assigned areas. The rank of Associate Professor or higher in a four-year college or university and demonstrated experience in research or special study work may be substituted for the four years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications


A graduate degree in special education or a related field and/or professional licensure in deaf blindness or a related field
Extensive knowledge and experience in the education of infants, toddlers, children and young adults who are deafblind.
Experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of pre-service training and in-service professional development activities.
Experience in systems change initiatives at the LEA and statewide level.
Experience in coordination of educational teams including development of technical assistance and training plans.
Experience in coordinating functional child-find activities to assist LEAs in the identification of deafblind children and youth.
Extensive knowledge of research-based and evidence-based educational strategies to meet the complex needs of deafblind learners.

Environmental/Physical/Special


Travel frequently and extensively throughout California.
Coordinate training and technical assistance that may include evening and weekend activities.
