AmeriCorps and Colorado State University Extension (CSUE) joined forces to give youth the opportunity to engage in 4-H Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) projects. The CSU Extension Education Support AmeriCorps Program is an initiative to provide classroom tutors and substitute teachers in school districts experiencing teacher shortages.

Position Summary
This AmeriCorps member serves in a local school district providing classroom tutoring to mitigate learning loss and substitute teaching support when teachers (K-12) are absent from school and there are no other available substitutes. Members will be trained and develop skills needed to apply to a teacher preparation program at the conclusion of the service year. Twenty (20) or more AmeriCorps positions are needed. Members can serve in different terms across the service year and the service term will vary based on the member’s service agreement. Service will begin with new member orientation scheduled throughout the year.
Members living allowance payments and Education Awards will vary based on their term of service. Specific details are laid out in the Member Service Agreement and will be discussed at the time of interview. 
Reduced half-time (675 hours): Members earn a living allowance of up to $11,911 (disbursed in equal payments every two weeks) as well as an Education Award of $2417.14 upon successful program completion of minimum time term. 
Half-time (900 hours): Members earn a living allowance of up to $15,988 (disbursed in equal payments every two weeks) as well as an Education Award of $3172.50 upon successful program completion of minimum time term.
Three-quarter time (1200 hours): Members earn a living allowance of up to $21,318 (disbursed in equal payments every two weeks) as well as an Education Award of $4441.50 upon successful program completion of minimum time term.
Position Minimum Qualifications
  • Be willing to provide direct services through classroom tutoring and substitute teaching as described in the position description. 
  • Be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national or a lawful permanent resident alien of the U.S.
  • Have a high school diploma or GED and/or a completed bachelor’s degree.
  • Be at least 18 years old. 
  • Have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
  • Pass required criminal background checks, including a National Sex Offender Website search
  • Be willing and able to complete the required service hours by date indicated in Member Service Agreement.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Be dedicated to community service.
  • Experience working with youth and enjoyment of working with youth.
  • Hands-on experience in the areas of education, youth development, or another related field.
  • Knowledge of developmental youth milestones and characteristics.
  • Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and complete multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to make a commitment to complete term of service as indicated in Member Service Agreement
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to serve in a team setting and to promote collaboration.
  • Ability and willingness to develop innovative and creative approaches to assigned responsibilities.
  • Ability and willingness to serve in a position with flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to use a computer for e-mail communication, online reporting (monthly time reports, quarterly impact data), and preparing monthly impact statements or semi-annual reflections.
  • Outgoing and personable nature.
  • Adaptable, practical, energetic, and intrinsically motivated.
  • Professional, respectful, and brings a positive attitude.

  • Collect, document, and report quantitative and qualitative impact data for semester progress reports and monthly impact statements.
