Job Summary
NHMU Youth and Family Programs Assistant is responsible for helping to provide high-quality experiences and memories for all participants in the Museum’s Youth and Family Programming department. This includes, but is not limited to, assisting with supplies, setting up program activities and experiments in program areas, aiding participants with projects and activities, and cleaning up spaces after a program. Customer service experience and effective communication skills are required, as is an outgoing, dynamic and self-directed nature. Experience working with youth in informal learning environments and those working towards a degree in Early Childhood Education, or similar fields, is preferred. During the summer, weekdays are required. During the regular school year, most Friday afternoons, Saturday and Sundays are required. Some evenings may be required with advanced notice.

Responsibilities
• Assisting with all Youth and Family programs, including birthday parties, classes and workshops, family late night programming, and summer camp sessions;
• Assisting with supply coordination, as well as upkeep and organization;
• Help with facilitation of programming, from setting up program spaces to assisting participants with activities and experiments;
• Assisting with program check in and out procedures;
• Making sure program participants feel welcome and are safe, engaged, and supported;
• Helping to make sure all programming offered is high-quality, entertaining, and educational in support of the Museum’s and the department’s mission

Minimum Qualifications

Three years experience as a classroom assistant in a related academic area, or equivalency; knowledge and understanding of a variety of teaching methods in order to adjust activities/training session to include participants of different ages; a thorough knowledge of related academic subjects in order to participate in developing classroom activities/programs; and demonstrated knowledge of teaching methods and communication skills to conduct educational activities and/or training sessions in a clear and concise manner required. Demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills are also required.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Preferences
• Broad knowledge of natural history and science topics;
• Experience with special events;
• Experience working with youth in informal learning environments;
• Working towards a degree in Early Childhood Education, or similar field;
• Second language proficiency
