Summary

We are looking for an innovative, experienced person to join our team as an Education Specialist for the Michigan Hospital Medicine Safety Consortium (HMS) . HMS is a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network funded Collaborative Quality Initiative . It is a data-driven collaborative made up of hospitals across the State of Michigan with a goal of improving the quality of care for hospitalized medical patients. The three main areas that HMS currently focuses on are: vascular access (PICCs  and Midlines ), antimicrobial use , and sepsis .

The Education Specialist acts as the education subject matter expert for the Quality Assurance team. Additionally, the Education Specialist is a key resource representative responsible for identifying, analyzing, and resolving data discrepancies and data collection issues. This process occurs during annual data quality audits for each member hospital. Within this role, you will be an essential part of the Coordinating Center  for HMS and work within a Quality Assurance team of four who report to the Assistant Program Manager. Currently, HMS has 69 hospitals/program participants . We also may recruit additional hospitals in the future.

Responsibilities*

Education Specialist

  • Oversee and lead the coordination of training and evaluation of Clinical Data Abstractors (CDAs) at each participating site for the PICC/Midline, Antimicrobial Use (ABX), and Sepsis initiatives
  • Collaborate with other members of the Quality Assurance team on the preparation, implementation, and management of educational content and training for CDAs
  • Create, maintain, disseminate, communicate, and present ongoing continuing education for CDAs, including web-based learning modules and tools to assist in comprehension of complex variables and alleviate training questions from CDAs
  • Conduct on-site or virtual trainings for CDAs on a monthly or bimonthly basis
  • Prepare and disseminate training materials specific to new data collection requirements when applicable
  • Plan, prepare, and maintain educational materials for use by CDAs to improve efficiency of abstraction within the PICC/Midline, ABX, and Sepsis Initiatives

Quality Management and Data Auditing:

  • Identify, analyze, and resolve data discrepancies and data collection issues at each site through annual audits
  • During audits, the Education Specialist will analyze a sample of cases abstracted by the site in the initiative being audited and compare the entries into the HMS data registry to the information available in the sites Electronic Medical Record
  • Audits will predominantly occur with the site in a virtual manner, but there may be times of travel to a site for auditing if the need arises
  • Work with the CDA and their IT department and other hospital staff to obtain clearance to the sites Electronic Medical Record system to conduct the audit
  • Provide an educational summary to site with audit findings and education elements addressed to assure accurate data collection; this involves both positive and constructive feedback delivery depending upon the results of the audit review
  • Continuously monitor, review, and assess the data collection process requirements that contribute to new and existing variable development
  • Identify challenges that may prevent CDAs from functioning at high levels of performance and work with CDAs to resolve these matters
  • Troubleshoot issues and concerns to ensure accurate and reliable functioning of audit tools

Additional Clinical Site Support:

  • Provide excellent customer service to CDAs for each of the participating sites when providing educational materials and conducting audits
  • Promote performance excellence in data abstraction and quality improvement by providing comprehensive, ongoing, and impromptu support and customer service to the CDA for each of the participating sites as it relates to training and audits
  • Responding to sites may occur via email, phone, virtual webinar consultations/presentations, and in-person audits to troubleshoot barriers and promote efficiency efforts
  • Suggest options for improving quality, identifying potential problems, as well as recommending and implementing solutions
  • Collaborate with the HMS data analysis team to recognize and investigate data variances as they relate to data integrity, validity, and reliability; facilitate variance resolution by working with appropriate Coordinating Center staff and site members/participants
  • Additional duties as assigned

Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelors degree in a health care-related field or quality (preferably nursing, informatics, or related field)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a health care setting
  • Demonstrated knowledge of program evaluation, clinical education, process improvement, and/or outcomes measurement is essential
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills as demonstrated in oral, written, and presentation formats
  • Excellent organizational skills and extremely high attention to detail
  • Solid organizational and time management skills, including the ability to work both independently and collaboratively on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills and abilities
  • Experienced with web-based computer systems required, familiarity and proficiency with MS Office products
  • Individual must be able to travel to meetings and to member hospitals across the state. Travel can be up to 1-2 times a month during certain times of the year

Desired Qualifications*
  • Masters degree in a health care field or quality
  • Experience in an inpatient healthcare setting
  • Experience with data management tools, healthcare analytics, and different Electronic Medical Record/Health Information Technology systems/vendors
  • Knowledge of auditing principles and techniques
  • Working knowledge of Michigan Medicine and University of Michigan policies and procedures

Work Locations

This position is located at Arbor Lakes, Ann Arbor, Michigan. This will be a hybrid role, combining both in-person and some remote work options, in accordance with Michigan Medicine Remote Work Policy.


Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
