Job Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill one part-time (approximately 18 hours per week) Education Program Assistant 1 position for the Division of Extension and Engagement’s Family and Community Health program at Oregon State University (OSU). This is a limited duration appointment expected to last approximately 8 months from the appointment begin date. This position is based at the OSU Extension Douglas County office in Roseburg, Oregon.
Extension programs in the College of Health align toward a common vision of lifelong health and well-being for individuals, families, and communities. The central purpose of this position is to extend the knowledge and research of OSU to the communities of Oregon in a manner that is responsive to local needs and respectful of local norms and culture. The individual in this position joins a network of campus-and community-based Extension faculty and staff who share this responsibility for community engagement.
Purpose of the Position
This EPA1 position is funded by a Community Health Improvement grant through Mercy Medical Center (MCC). MCC will screen patients to assess if they have access to community resources to ensure health and wellness, including food security, and refer those without access to a Community Health Worker (CHW). The primary role of this position will be to collaborate with the CHW to address any challenges or unmet needs including SNAP benefits; arranging home delivered meals; coordinating a food pantry closet at the hospital; transportation to food pantries; and other needs as identified.
This position will work under the supervision of the FCH/SNAP-Ed Managing Faculty Member. Programs are implemented in a manner that measures impact, fosters program improvement, and strengthens community connections. This position requires travel to various sites within the county it serves.

Key Responsibilities
This Education Program Assistant embeds the commitment of the university to a collaborative and inclusive community in all interactions and duties performed and practices a welcoming and respectful workplace environment.
70% Program Implementation/ Delivery
  • Meet weekly with Community Health Worker (CHW) to address any challenges or unmet needs of patients, particularly those issues relative to food insecurity.
  • Collaborate with community groups, such as Feeding Umpqua, home-delivered meals programs, and the Department of Human Services to stay current on nutrition-based resources.
  • Actively promote the project through outreach and education activities, including food tastings, participation in coalitions focused on food insecurity issues, and contributing to community-based events.
  • Support the development and upkeep of a food pantry closet at the hospital.
  • Deliver preapproved curriculum/programs for managing food resources, making/preparing healthy food choices and handling food safely in a variety of community settings. Uses OSU Extension Service approved curricula, materials, and information.
  • Provide trainings to partners/community with approved curriculums.
  • Engage community partners and community members in a culturally responsive manner.
  • Contribute to equity, inclusion, and diversity as part of educational delivery and programming.


25% –Planning, Preparing, Reporting and Evaluating
  • Oversee weekly ordering, picking up, and restocking of the food supplies for the food pantry closet. Help with daily temperature checks Monday through Friday and keep up-to-date expiration/used by date records for all products in food pantry. This will involve travel to various locations throughout the county.
  • Participating in partner meetings to provide a status report on the number of patients seen and outcomes to be used for project evaluation.
  • Participate in evaluation of program effectiveness.

5% – Meetings & Trainings and Other Duties
  • Attends scheduled meetings and trainings. Attends County Extension staff meetings and participates in regional/state OSU Extension Service activities, as directed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
What We Require

High School Diploma or equivalent and at least two years of relevant experience (paid or volunteer), supporting community programs that serve children, youth, or adults
OR Associate Degree and one year of work experience (paid or volunteer) which must be working in youth development programs, adult education, teaching, program delivery or related functions
AND
Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrated skill to work with diverse audiences.
Demonstrated skill to use computers for word processing, data management, and communications.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish). Demonstrated ability to engage Spanish-speaking audiences through the utilization of bilingual, bi-literate and multi-cultural skills.
  • Experience working with community partners (such as DHS, WIC, schools or other agencies).
  • Experience with food preparation and food handling.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule

  • Sustained time on your feet moving, lifting and sorting a large quantity of items.
  • Flexibility to perform work in a variety of settings and on evenings and weekends depending on program needs and as approved by Supervisor.
  • Ability to lift, push and pull up to 30lbs.
