Duke University Press is seeking a capable and enthusiastic Editorial Associate, preferably with an advanced degree in a field of the humanities or social sciences, to assist the Editorial Director with book acquisitions in the humanities and social sciences.
The Editorial Associate is responsible for many essential tasks in the acquisitions process, including regular, direct correspondence with authors, involvement in reviewing and contracting for manuscripts, and preparing manuscripts for production. Applicants should possess strong communication and organizational skills and have a desire to learn the ins and outs of scholarly publishing. I. Editorial Assistance
• Screen manuscript proposals and help determine project feasibility
• Assist Editorial Director with the review process
• Draft rejection letters on behalf of the Editorial Director
• Obtain peer reviews of proposals and manuscripts; communicate with reviewers and request honoraria payments
• Communicate with authors about manuscripts and art preparation
• Prepare manuscripts for transmittal into production; organize artwork and permissions; communicate with DUP production team about art and manuscript preparation
• Prepare materials for contract approval and Editorial Board Meetings; draft book descriptions for editorial board packets

Work requires knowledge of basic mathematical, research and communications principles normally acquired through two years of postsecondary education.
Work generally requires four years of clerical or research experience to acquire strong skills in administrative or project research responsibilities as well as accepted office management, communications and research practices. A bachelor's degree in a field of study directly related to the specific position may be substituted for the education and two years of the experience requirement.
