Position Overview

The Editor leads content strategy for The Ohio State University’s Advancement Marketing and Communications (AMC) department as delivered across a variety of owned channels with particular focus on delivering the stories alumni and donor audiences find most compelling.

Partnering with internal stakeholders, the Editor conceptualizes and oversees content generation, storytelling, and philanthropic positioning in support of business, marketing, and engagement goals. Providing strategic direction and leadership, the Editor works in close collaboration with other members of the AMC team to create content strategies and oversee their implementation.

The Editor has direct responsibility for editorial oversight of The Ohio State University Alumni Association (OSUAA) Alumni Magazine (OSAM) and manages one direct report, the Associate Editor. Working with partners in the university’s Office of Marketing and Communications (OMC), aligning with Enterprise themes where possible, the Editor will publish OSAM content regularly in both print and digital formats maintaining a cohesive look and feel in direct alignment with Ohio State brand standards.

The Editor is an exceptional storyteller and a seasoned writer and editor with strong editorial acumen. They are highly skilled in communication and interpersonal relations and have the executive presence to interact directly with senior university leadership.

Duties and Responsibilities

50%  

  • With the primary authority for OSAM, the Editor provides strategic editorial direction, creates and maintains a rolling content calendar, and ensures an intentional, diverse mix of stories

  • Partners with editorial art director to align visual elements with content

  • With project manager, helps maintain production schedules

  • Liaises with senior OSUAA leadership on content decisions and approvals

  • Tracks story ideas and provides follow up

  • Makes writing assignments – including identifying and managing freelancers

  • Writes and edits content as needed

  • Collaborates with OMC on graphic design, photography, illustration, and other production resources to meet storytelling goals, production schedules and deadlines

  • Stays abreast of the publication industry, readership trends, and best practices; conducts regular readership surveys

  • Responds to reader feedback

  • Leads content strategy for AMC

  • In conjunction with internal partners, leads definition of target alumni and donor audiences

  • Sets storytelling goals in support of business, marketing and engagement objectives

  • Crafts main messages

  • Determines appropriate channels and formats

  • Sets distribution strategies

  • Collaborates with writers, editors, and other content generation partners – including enterprise partners, college and unit colleagues, researchers, videographers, digital strategists, and others – who may be internal or external to the university

  • Oversees business processes for OSAM

  • Determines page count for each print issue

  • Assigns distribution of editorial and ad space

  • Oversees production budget, reviews invoices, approves resources

  • Edits content pieces to ensure they follow tone and style guides, maintains all Ohio State brand standards

  • With AMC and OMC partners, streamlines systems and procedures where possible to ensure seamless production processes and to build efficiencies

  • When needed, interface with vendors which may include printers, mail houses, fulfilment centers, USPS, etc.

  • Manages and oversees the work of the Associate Editor

  • Establishes and monitors goals, provides performance feedback and coaching, supports professional development, completes annual performance management procedures, manages performance issues, assigns and prioritizes work, and ensures that the resources needed to accomplish work are provided

  • Ensures timely distribution through digital channels including the website, emails, and Ohio State app

  • Applies knowledge of SEO best practices

  • With business partners, monitors the results of various content to inform future decisions

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing, English or a related field.

  • Six (6) years of direct professional experience in print and/or digital media such as magazine, newspaper, television, social media, blog, etc.

  • Demonstrated experience as a senior content director and editor; a professional portfolio must be submitted.

  • Previous leadership experience.

  • Exceptionally strong verbal, written, and organizational skills.

  • Extreme attention to detail, time management skills, ability to meet deadlines.

  • Creatively problem solve, be curious, be adaptable to changing priorities.

  • Master’s degree in communications, journalism, English or similar field

  • Eight to ten (8–10) years of direct professional experience in print and/or digital media such as magazine, newspaper, television, social media, blog, etc. preferred.

  • Four (4) years of professional experience as an editor-in-chief function with a publication

  • Professional experience writing for audiences in a university setting.

The pay range for this job profile is $79,000 - $105,500 (min - mid). The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
