POSITION TITLE: Emergency Department Technician DEPARTMENT: Emergency
REPORTS TO: Director of Emergency Services
JOB SUMMARY
The Emergency Department Technician (EMT) is trained to provide limited patient care. He/she must have good interpersonal skills and the ability to work in diverse situations. He/she works under the direction of a Registered nurse.

TECHNICAL SKILLS/JOB SPECIFIC SKILLS/*ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*
TELEPHONE SKILLS - Demonstrates hospital telephone etiquette by answering the phones promptly, courteously and identifying department and self.
POLICIES/PROCEDURES- Is aware of and follows all hospital and department policies and procedures.
TEAM WORK-Promotes positive co-worker relationships through team work and cooperation. Understands and supports the needs of individuals in other departments and promotes conflict resolution. Shares information, work knowledge and experience with coworkers, physicians and students in a non-threatening manner. Offers assistance and promptly responds to requests.
PRODUCTIVITY-Maintains high productivity and performs efficiently regardless of whether the work volume is high or low. Appropriately prioritizes work activities. Responds to difficult situations with self-control and a positive attitude. Makes decisions independently and knows when to ask for assistance. Exercises good judgment and arrives at sound decisions.
Documentation is accurate, complete and legible.
Proactively monitors and reports changes in the patient's condition and comfort level to the nurse or physician.

Prepares patients for discharge, admission, or transfer to another facility, surgery, treatments or diagnostic procedures.
Transports non-critical patients and assists the RN in transporting critical patients to assigned bed.
Acts as a courier to ancillary departments as necessary, including transport of medications to and from the Pharmacy under the RNS direction. Assists in ordering, stocking and maintaining control of inventory.
Assists with other procedures according to guidelines after training and individual instruction. Procedures included but not limited to: dressings, splinting, crutch training, aseptic/sterile technique, visual acuity, restraint monitoring, and Post Mortem care.
Responsible for performing 12 lead EKGs, insuring timeliness, checking orders and charting completion.
Maintains clean well stocked bedsides for patient safety assuring gurneys, cables, BP cuffs, IV pumps equipment are available clean and functional.
Able to perform unit secretary responsibilities including timely and efficient initiation or monitoring of patient care orders, and coordinating communication within the department, hospital and consults. Also, maintain accurate tracking of patient flow via the electronic tracking/documentation system.
Assists in orientation of new EMTs and acts as a resource person for EMT students and volunteers
Performs other duties as assigned.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
MANDATORY:
Current EMT Certification with recent ambulance or hospital experience
Current CPR Certification.
Non-violent crisis intervention within three months of hire and recertification every year thereafter.
PREFERRED:
Basic ECG class.
ACLS
Computer literate
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must be able to walk and stand for long periods of time
Must be able to lift and position patients
Must have dexterity, coordination, visual and auditory acuity to perform patient care procedures. Must be able to perform CPR without restriction
