Indiana University's Department of Economics is one of the most highly ranked Economics departments in the United States, offering comprehensive coverage of the major fields in modern economics. The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest academic unit at Indiana University Bloomington. It is composed of 40+ departments, 50+ Centers, Programs, and Institutes, while also including the Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture and Design, the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies, and The Media School. Faculty in the College teach over 50 percent of the Indiana University (Bloomington) credit hours in 80+ buildings on the Bloomington campus.

Department Specific Responsibilities

  • This position requires a great deal of autonomy as it interacts with students independently of direct supervision and provides advising in regards to available degree programs, degree requirements, and suggested courses to meet requirements.
  • Develops and maintains graduate student records database for 100 graduate students in Economics.
  • Drafts letters for accepted students and coordinates their funding package. Maintains and updates College and Graduate Student Bulletin and Graduate Student Handbook. Manages PhD Minor database of students who have declared a minor, verify completion of minor and prepare memo to their home department.
  • Serves as ex officio member of the Admissions Committee assisting members of the Committee with scheduling meetings and making application decisions.
  • Serves as PhD career placement coordinator for the department.
  • Since 80% of graduate students are international, requires regular interaction with Office of International Services in throughout the admission process and during each student¿s graduate career at Indiana University, including interaction on employment eligibility and allowable course plans to maintain visa status.
    Independently coordinates with the Luddy School on Luddy students taking Economics M5XX courses.
  • The joint MS with Luddy will require increased independent interaction with the Luddy School graduate office as those students will be students of both Luddy and Economics.
  • Economics will be maintaining all admissions, programming, and graduate records for these students.
  • Tracks graduate student progress to degree and identifies and resolves problems in meeting degree requirements.
  • Prepares annual faculty review of progress to degree for PhD and MS students.
  • Prepares and files required forms for graduate student candidacy and degrees.
  • Coordinates annual advising sessions for PhD and MS students.
  • Works with faculty on scheduling of core and field exams and proctor all core and field exams.
  • Delivers core and field exam answers to faculty for scoring and then records and reports those results, including notification of students. Explains ramifications of specific results to said students and provides next steps.
  • Advises faculty on graduate student research enrollments and on credit hour statistics for Faculty Summary Reports.
  • Processes Grad registration e-adds/approvals for G599 and G901, grade change approval for grad courses, administers placement exams
  • Coordinates schedule of oral exams, dissertation proposals, and dissertation defenses with students and their committees.
  • Oversees processing of applications and records for the department including admissions. 
  • Makes independent decisions regarding application procedures and materials usage.
  • Advises prospective students on degree programs.
  • Generates and manages applicant files; calculates GPAs; maintains database on applicants
  • Generates statistical reports on status of admissions.
  • Processes admission files through the graduate school and International Admissions; Coordinates student recruitment and admitted student travel as well as special events for both.
  • Serves as PhD career placement coordinator for the department.
  • Develops and maintains database of Economics PhD students and graduates currently on the job market. Collects letters, curriculum vitaes, and job market papers for individual students and maintains confidential files of the material.
  • Delivers documents via mail and online application systems to allow students to apply for economics positions across the world.
  • Distributes information on employment vacancies received by the department to students currently pursuing employment.
  • Maintains database of students and graduates who accept positions.
  • Coordinates all Grad Recruitment and Orientation Events including campus visits for applicants. Manages all aspects of these annual events, programs, and other extra-curriculars. programming as requested by Director of Graduate Studies, Department Administrator and Department Chair. 
  • Maintains records of program activities, and suggests improvements to programs for future reference.
  • Coordinates new cohort orientation schedule including a week full of activities to acclimate students to Economics and Indiana University.

General Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements programs and initiatives that touch on various/multiple student-related goals, such as enhancing and reinforcing academic engagement and experiential learning; increasing student engagement, wellness, and involvement; fostering learning, inclusion, and development; supporting students in crisis and adversity; and improving the student campus experience.
  • Interfaces directly with students by attending student programming events, advising student organization leaders, meeting 1-on-1 to discuss areas of concern on campus, and gathering satisfaction feedback from student participants to implement into future student services initiatives and objectives.
  • Collaborates with staff in own department and other departments, as well as academic and campus leaders, on shared student services goals, often coordinating funding to sponsor student programs and initiatives.
  • Projects outcomes for services offered at the program, department/division, or campus level. Measures and evaluates effectiveness of student services against projected outcomes; may prepare reports on impact to students and budget and may present to stakeholders on effectiveness and to secure funding for initiatives moving forward.
  • May serve on committees and perform student services research across the field of higher education and at peer institutions to identify and recommend best practices.
  • Plans and coordinates communications for student services initiatives to ensure student participation and engagement.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in public affairs, counseling, social work, education, business, or related field

Preferred

  • Master's degree in higher education student affairs or related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

  • Some experience in student services, higher education, or related field
  • Previous experience in this or similar position at IU is desirable but not required.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
