Description
We are seeking three (3) technicians to assist one (1) PhD student with a project focusing on wild turkey reproductive ecology. Field work is expected to start January 2, 2023 and run through July 31, 2023 though these dates can be reasonably flexible. The project will specifically focus on chronology of turkey gobbling, spatial ecology, genetics, harvest, nesting, and brood rearing on a matrix of public and private lands in Kentucky. The role of the technician will be assisting with turkey trapping, radio telemetry, habitat sampling, deployment/monitoring of trail cameras, deployment of ARUs, data recording and processing. To accomplish these tasks, technicians will work both independently and as part of a small crew. Technicians who desire to learn ArcGIS, R-coding language, and various other software will have ample opportunity to do so. This project collaborates with and is funded by Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, The Hunting Public (THP), Turkeys for Tomorrow, NWTF-KY Chapter, and the University of Georgia Wild Turkey Lab. We will be filming TV episodes and social media short form content with project collaborators; technicians are encouraged to participate as we highly value their contribution to science. Research will be conducted near Drakesboro, Kentucky. Bowling Green lies 45 minutes east and major cities such as Nashville, TN and Louisville, KY are approximately 2 hours away. Shared-housing and field vehicles will be provided.
Qualifications
Applicants must have a valid driver’s license. Preference will be given to applicants that have a B.S. in wildlife ecology or related field. Competitive candidates will be expected to: (1) Have previous field experience that includes animal capture and tagging. (2) Have previous experience with radio telemetry and wildlife tracking. (3) Have strong work ethic and interpersonal skills as daily interaction with landowners, hunters, state agency personnel, and other stake holders will occur. (4) Work early mornings, late nights and weekends when necessary. (5) Have experience operating 4-wd vehicles and ATV's. (6) Have experience with vegetation sampling and surveys. To Apply: Applicants should send via email a single .pdf document (with the subject line titled: Wild Turkey Tech) containing a cover letter that details interest and qualifications for the project, a resume/CV, as well as contact information for three (3) references. This posting is an extension to a previous advertisement. Applications will be reviewed as they are received and you are encouraged to apply early.
