The Earth Science Branch at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama https://science.msfc.nasa.gov/earth-science-home plans to announce the availability of multiple positions for remote sensing scientists to conduct research and to develop applications from Earth observations to solve challenging Earth science problems.
Opportunities include:
- Research supporting NASA’s SERVIR Coordination Office (https://www.servirglobal.net/#aboutservir ) and coordination of its Applied Science Teams projects. Specific emphasis will be on science and application product development and research portfolio coordination associated with remote sensing of air quality on a regional and global basis using available satellite measurements systems.
- Research supporting land surface process studies and product development using hyperspectral and thermal remote sensing measurements and / or surface modeling techniques focused on NASA’s Freshwater initiative of the Earth Information System (EIS; https://freshwater.eis.smce.nasa.gov/ ) and / or science and applications associated with the Surface Biology and Geology (SBG) Earth Systems Observing (ESO) mission (https://science.nasa.gov/earth-science/decadal-sbg ).
- Remote sensing research and applications supporting NASA’s wildfire “FireSense” initiative (https://appliedsciences.nasa.gov/our-impact/news/nasa-makes-firesense ) with emphasis on pre-fire risk determination, active fire and smoke detection, and / or post-fire damage detection, flooding risk, and vegetation recovery activities.
Potential applicants should have remote sensing expertise and experience developing and applying advanced tools, techniques, and / or data analysis / mining / machine learning approaches to observational datasets collected with optical, thermal, and / or microwave remote sensing measurement systems to solve complex Earth system problems. Qualified applicants should have made regular contributions to a research team with limited guidance and direction, have had demonstrated success in the development of new analysis techniques to solve challenging problems, made contributions to peer-reviewed proposals in response to technical solicitations, and have conveyed research results through peer-reviewed publications as part of their publication record.
The positions will be formally announced in the near future in USAJobs (www.usajobs.gov) under the category of Research Physical Scientist, Earth Science Remote Sensing, at the GS-13 and GS14 grade levels and can be found by searching with keyword NASA and location of Huntsville, Alabama. Applications are only accepted through the USAJobs portal. Scientists with potential interest in these positions are encouraged to create a USAJobs profile well in advance of any future announcements and to subscribe to receive USAJobs alerts via email to be alerted to the new announcements.
