Department Summary

As Cornell University’s online learning unit, eCornell delivers online professional certificate courses to individuals and organizations around the world. Courses are personally developed by Cornell faculty with expertise in a wide range of topics, including data analytics, management, marketing, human resources, leadership, and STEM. The Opportunity:

Your role will include managing the product backlog, collaborating on requirement documentation, identifying the right solutions across various systems, running daily scrums and unblocking barriers to keep the team moving. As the Director of Strategic projects, you’ll be the driving force for ensuring the delivery of all strategic projects, while ensuring the Scrum process is understood and enacted.  Working in close collaboration with the development, QA, and Business Analysts, you’ll be responsible for coaching the team to self-organize and create high value products and remove impediments to the Development Teams’ progress.  In addition, you’ll also be managing large infrastructure projects that require coordination with external vendors and other units within Cornell.

Responsibilities:

  • Managing the end-to-end delivery of complex system solutions, establishing, and controlling project constraints and scope

  • Facilitating daily stand-up, iteration planning, sprint review, and iteration retrospective

  • Managing the engineering development projects and facilitating sprint releases

  • Guiding team in time estimating practices and facilitating team estimates.

  • Driving team iteration execution, communicating with management and stakeholders, protecting the team from uncontrolled injection of work

  • Ensure that the scrum team adheres to scrum theory, practices and rules, and work as a servant leader within the project team. 

  • Providing clear ownership for and visibility of the resolution of all project risks and issues

  • Establish clear stakeholder expectations for requirements of high complexity, which require significant discovery and analysis.

  • Lead improvements to the efficiency and effectiveness of the project delivery service and contribute to the identification of areas of improvement.

  • Lead projects with several critical IT and infrastructure components; Manage the planning, implementation, communication, tracking and reporting.  Work with business leadership to define scope.

  • May provide direction, coaching and supervision of staff.

  • Manage the analysis of business requirements and problem resolution as needed

What you will need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, Computer Science, or related field.  5-7 years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • 5+ years of project management experience and 2 years leading sprints.

  • Experienced in the delivery of projects in an Agile environment.

  • Experience (preferably certified) in Scrum methodology, with familiarity of other project frameworks such as RUP, Lean, Kanban

  • Enthusiastic, driven, self-motivated with a focus on customer service.

  • Able to work independently, excellent personal organization and able to demonstrate consistently balanced good judgment and logical thought prioritization. 

  • Very strong interpersonal skills including facilitation and coaching and being able to lead and influence others. 

  • Deep understanding of the fundamentals of iterative and incremental development

  • Deep understanding of agile metrics (tasks, backlog tracking, burndown metrics, velocity, user stories etc.) to analyze and improve sprint planning.

  • A real interest in problem solving and focused on results.

  • Experience in the use of tools and techniques to facilitate effective project delivery. 

  • Exposure to or awareness of all phases of software development projects including analysis, systems design, development, and testing approaches.

  • Proven record of establishing credibility rapidly to enable them to effectively establish critical relationships with Directors, Managers, and Project Team Members from various parts of the organization.

  • Proven experience proactively leading and managing large cross functional teams.

  • Proven experience working in a fast paced, deadline driven, complex, and rapidly changing environment.

  • Demonstrated skill in understanding of cultural differences.  

  • Proven experience connecting diversity, inclusion, and wellbeing practices to business goals. 

What we prefer:

  • PMP Certification or demonstrated progress to obtain is preferable

  • Experience working with third-party software vendors.

  • Experience in higher education

  • Experience managing website or web application projects.

  • Experience managing infrastructure / hardware upgrade projects
