The department of Journalism and Media Communication focuses on journalistic and other uses and effects of mass and specialized media. To fulfill this role, the department engages in:
Undergraduate teaching, to examine with students the knowledge, skills, and values necessary for traditional and innovative approaches to professional journalistic and related communication responsibilities.
Graduate teaching, to explore with advanced students communication concepts, theories, research methods, and sophisticated application in academic and advanced professional work environments.
Scholarship and creative activity, to help understand the nature, processes, technologies, effects, and problems of communication, modern media, and journalism/communication education.
Interdisciplinary teaching, research, and outreach, especially as related to science, technical, health, and environmental communication.
Service to the university, professional media, and academic organizations, including outreach to the public and media/communication constituencies.

Position Summary
Join an interdisciplinary team of researchers from Colorado State University and University of Hawaii as a drone pilot field research assistant on a project testing a new communication approach to encouraging respectful and lawful viewing of protected marine species in Hawaii. As a drone pilot field research assistant, you will help carry out data collection by acting as the Remote Pilot in Command (RPIC) on missions to collect data on human-dolphin interactions by operating a drone from shore over the ocean. As the RPIC, you will carry responsibility for managing the drone equipment, mission planning and execution within Part 107 regulations and FAA recommendations, troubleshooting, and other drone-related coordination, upkeep, and planning. 
From November 17 through December 18, you will work in the Kailua-Kona area and areas south of there as assigned, including weekends and possibly holidays, for about 4 to 10 hours each day assigned, excluding commute time to destinations. Hours and days will vary. Accommodations in a shared rental house are provided so long as you are actively working on the project from Nov. 16-Dec. 14. From Nov. 14-19, you are eligible for up to $500 in reimbursement for lodging expenses. A shared rental vehicle will also be available for work use. No other expenses are covered or reimbursable.
This work takes place outdoors in areas that pose risk and natural hazards and is physical in nature. It is likely to require strenuous activity/exercise exposed to the elements in order to perform the work.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:
*Remote Pilot in Command for drone data collection from shore over ocean waters and protected marine species, managing all aspects of drone management, mission planning and execution within FAA regulations and recommendations, troubleshooting, and coordination
*Collaborate with students and faculty from CSU’s Center for Science Communication and University of Hawaii-Hilo to support other needs of the study
*Help place signage and deliver materials to partnering businesses
*Train and manage student volunteers on the project who may act as visual observers or ground control
*When drone operations are not safe or practical, conduct photography observational data collection and/or visual-only based data entry in the field

Position Minimum Qualifications
*Logged hours of drone operating experience and FAA Part 107 license 
*Marine field research experience
*Basic knowledge of entering data into Microsoft Excel and working efficiently within the program on both the mobile and desktop/laptop versions
*Detail-oriented and organized
*Responsible and honest
*Flexible, resourceful, and able to solve unexpected problems to achieve the task at hand
*Able to engage in moderate to intense physical activity of hiking 4 miles with about a 1,200-foot elevation gain on the 2 miles back over uneven volcanic lava rock and off-trail wilderness and to kayak 3 miles roundtrip in the ocean, not including paddling time/distance around the bay.
*Some college coursework completed
*Employment is contingent upon compliance with CSU’s vaccine attestation and federal government covid-19 vaccine or testing requirements.

*Outdoor safety training and/or other related expertise or wilderness training
*Water and/or ocean safety training
