The University of Maryland Graduate School (www.graduate.umaryland.edu/ ) is seeking applicants for a .8- 1.0 FTE, non-tenure track, 12-month appointment as Assistant or Associate Professor, in the Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) program at the UMB Graduate school.  Assistant or Associate appointments are long-term, renewable contracts and are eligible for promotion. The faculty will assist the Program Director to ensure that program achieves the highest standards for DMSc education. The faculty will contribute to the graduate school through service, scholarship and teaching and may choose to work .20 clinically if they choose .8 FTE.  DMSc faculty are expected to work collaboratively with other faculty in the Graduate School to advance the mission, vision and goals of UMB. The faculty member will assist with program recruitment, promotion and course development, teaching, implementation, and evaluation of the DMSc. The selected candidate will be based in Baltimore, Maryland. The ideal candidate will have clinical expertise and experience in physician assistant education as well as familiarity with doctoral-level training for Physician Assistants.

Since 1918, the University of Maryland Graduate School has grown to become among the most respected schools in the country offering graduate education and training in biomedical, health, and human service sciences.  We offer Master of Science (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree programs, and post-baccalaureate certificate programs in these areas of study. We offer a M.S. in Health Sciences with a Physician Assistant concentration as well as a PhD program in Health Professions Education that caters to physician assistants.  We also offer dual degrees with the University's professional schools including PhD/MD, PhD/PharmD and PhD/DDS degree programs, and we participate in inter-institutional studies in biochemistry and gerontology with other University System of Maryland campuses.

 

All doctoral students are actively engaged in research with faculty members to address some of society's most pressing problems and biomedical research's most challenging questions in basic and translational research. These innovative efforts, supported by research grants and contracts, are undertaken collaboratively with the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the University of Maryland Medical Center, the Veterans Affairs Medical center, the Institutes for Human Virology, and others.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Contribute to the development of a rigorous curricula and course content for the DMSc.  When appropriate, facilitate the development of new curricula and courses, course syllabi and outlines; revise courses, evaluate curricula and make recommendations for expansion and/or terminations of program components. 
  • Engage in ongoing continuous improvement and evaluation of the DMSc.
  • Collaborate with instructional designers in the Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning (FCTL).
  • Recruit, teach and advise students and monitor their course and program progression.
  • Implement strategies for student recruitment, participate in admissions, counsel students concerning program requirements.
  • Undertake monitoring and assessment of students’ course work, project work and examinations, and maintain up-to-date and accurate records of their progress and achievement; participate on established Graduate School committees.
  • Serve as a liaison with appropriate committees to evaluate relevance of curriculum content and to communicate and evaluate teaching objectives.
  • Collaborate with faculty and administrators in different UMB schools, departments, and divisions to integrate the Doctor of Medical Science program across the university.
  • Ensure high quality academic support for students.
  • Address the needs of a highly diverse student population in age, ethnicity, and cultural background.
  • Engage in scholarly activity in areas of interest.  Scholarship is broadly interpreted and may include discovery, application, integration, implementation and assessment of novel instructional methods.
 

Qualifications

 
  • Earned doctoral degree, or doctoral candidacy with an anticipated graduation within 6 months of hire.
  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program.
  • Current NCCPA certification and eligibility for Maryland licensure as Physician Assistant with a minimum of seven years of clinical practice experience.
  • Demonstrated interest in interprofessional, student-centered learning, and health profession education innovation.
  • Demonstrated potential for teaching excellence.
  • Service to the academic life of a college and/or university system.  Where appropriate, contributions to the professional or lay community pertinent to the candidate’s professional training may meet the service criterion.
  • Scholarly contributions to the candidate’s field appropriate for the rank.
