General Description of the Position

THIS POSITION IS 100% GRANT FUNDED

The Delaware State University DNA Core is recruiting a motivated and ambitious Researcher or Post-doc who wants to build a scientific career in bioinformatics and/or data science research with applications in Biology and Food/Agricultural Sciences. The successful candidate will have a strong background in bioinformatics, molecular biology, and quantitative skills and will be strongly interested in pursuing computational projects, as well as a combination with some wet-lab research.


Essential Functions & Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The following are the functions essential to performing this job, but are not limited to:

1. Lead bioinformatics projects, develop bioinformatics pipelines for whole genome sequencing, metagenomics, and/or transcriptomics (ex: genome sequencing, genome assembly, syntenic alignment, gene annotation, comparative genomic analysis, etc.)2. Develop training and service programs for the DNA sequencing core3. Conduct wet lab experiments with technologies commonly used in molecular labs (ex. PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA/RNA prep, sequencing library preps, etc.)4. Prepare grant proposals and manuscripts5. Train/supervise core users and project participants6. Operate and manage NGS system and core equipment/HPC7. Assist the core director in developing a DNA core

The following are the required knowledge, skills and abilities to performing this job, but are not limited to:

1. The individual should hold an advanced degree in molecular biology, computational biology, (bio)statistic, food/agriculture or a similar field. Strong programming language (ex: Python, R, Perl, C++,etc.), NGS (Next-Generation Sequencing) background, and statistical programming software (ex: SAS, SPSS, MATLAB, etc.) is required.
2. The individual will have previous experience in computational genomics (ex: whole genome sequencing, metagenomics, transcriptomics, etc.) with operating NGS system desirable.
3. The individual will have strong wet-lab research experience (ex: molecular biology, microbiology, bacteriophage and/or virus research, etc.).
4. The individual will possess strong oral and written communication skills.
5. The individual will possess critical thinking ability, work ethic, initiative, management skill, consistency and strong self-motivation.
6. The individual will have the ability to perform research projects independently and collaborate with others


Qualification Standards

Education: Ph.D. or M.S. in bioinformatics, genomics, molecular biology, or comparable interrelated field.
