Position Announcement

UVU Police dispatcher receives incoming calls for service and dispatches officers, emergency medical personnel and equipment as appropriate in both emergency and non-emergency calls. Monitors police radio transmissions; documents police service requests in an electronic records management and dispatch system. Ensures the safety of students, faculty, staff, employees and officers through means of proper protocol and training. Maintains certifications and training necessary to function as a dispatcher.


Summary of Responsibilities

  • Receives incoming calls concerning crimes, emergencies, and other requests for police and other campus services. Broadcasts calls to patrol officers instructing them to investigate complaints or requests when appropriate. Records calls broadcast and complaints received via data entry using computer(s).
  • Monitors alarm systems for all university buildings. Coordinates departmental paging in the event of a campus emergency. Relays radio and telephone messages between police officers and the community. Controls access to police department secured areas and monitors the departments and school’s closed circuit camera and intercom systems.
  • Operates a National Crime Information Center (NCIC) computer, a computer-aided mobile dispatch (CAD) system, and an 800 mhz radio console. Performs various clerical duties including completing the electronic dispatch log and filing police reports.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications
Previous dispatch experience preferred.
Preferred Certifications
EMD, EFD, EPD, BLS, EMT, UTAH POST, UCJIS, BCI


Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

Knowledge    

  • Familiar with computers, phones and/or radio systems.
Skills   
  • Types a minimum of 40 WPM.
Abilities    
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks and solve problems in a technical setting.
  • Ability to interact and communicate with people over the telephone, often in stressful situations.
