Position Summary Information
Objective | The Director is responsible for oversight and leadership of the Veterinary Technology program to include planning, development, evaluation, assessment, and curricular revision through collaboration with administrators, faculty and staff. |

Essential Duties | 1. Responsible for maintaining compliance with all accreditation standards for Veterinary Technology Program, including meeting AVMA-CVTEA, THECB, and ACS standards. 2. Coordinate and guide curriculum to include evaluation and revision of course syllabi. Ensure participation of all faculty in this process. Assure utilization of the syllabi in all courses. 3. Maintain liaison with advisory committees, Texas A&M University, College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (TAMU-CVM), clinical agencies, and accrediting bodies as indicated. 4. Create Program goals yearly and plan strategies to accomplish goals consistent with the college mission and goals. 5. Promote positive morale and team spirit with the faculty/students of the program. This will include interpretation and implementation of the College and program mission, philosophy, and goals to the faculty, students and community. 6. Coordinate recruitment, advising, and placement for students in the program. Collaborate with other staff to communicate students’ needs/goals to appropriate agencies, departments, and managers. 7. Utilize established course syllabi to prepare lecture outline and notes based on course objectives and stated student learning outcomes. 8. Provide instruction for a maximum regular course load of 12 ILUs per Fall and Spring and a maximum of 7 ILUs for the Summer semesters in the classroom, laboratory, and/or clinical setting, and attend all assigned sessions/rotations. 9. Design examinations, quizzes, assignments and projects; construct grading rubrics; grade student tests and projects promptly; maintain notes, lectures, and grades electronically on the campus server; and complete all required reports in a timely manner. 10.Participate in clinical visits, document student performance, and complete all clinical evaluations with input from the TAMU-CVMBS, the Clinical Coordinator, and/or other agency staff, according to College and Program policies. 11.Provide oversight of program budget to effectively maintain adequate equipment, materials and supplied inventory; develop specifications and bid lists for equipment and supplies when appropriate; and provide recommendations for learning resources, materials and equipment. 12.Complete required reports and including, but not limited to: payroll, budget recommendations, appropriate accounting reports, class scheduling, faculty assignments, and accreditation reports. 13.Develop the class schedule of offerings, consistent with approved courses, contact hours, and credit hours. Review and revise catalog information and brochures pertaining to the Program. 14.Participate in all assigned activities necessary to recruit, select, and retain students for the Veterinary Technology Program. 15.Serve on assigned Program and College committees; participate in Program and College faculty meetings; participate in other Program and College activities as needed, such as serving as a faculty advisor for veterinary technology student organization(s). 16.Perform effectively and safely the duties of a DVM or RVT while supervising/ instructing/ assisting students in laboratories or clinical settings. 17.Maintain professional competency through practice, continuing education, and professional activities. 18.Keep informed of and evaluate major trends in the specific areas of instruction methodology and technology. 19.Promote high standards of excellence in assigned courses/duties and demonstrate positive morale and team spirit, including support of the College’s, Division’s, and Program’s missions, philosophies, and goals to students and community. 20.Perform other job-related duties as assigned. |
Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities | 1) Must be a current Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) in the State of Texas, with a minimum of an Associate of Applied Science degree in Veterinary Technology from an AVMA accredited institution, OR a current licensed Texas Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. 2) Have at least 3 years’ experience in a clinical veterinary setting. 3) Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other faculty, staff, students, and others as required. 4) Demonstrate excellent mathematical abilities as well as excellent written and oral communication skills. |
Preferred Experience and Training | 1) A current licensed veterinarian (DVM) in the State of Texas. 2) Teaching experience in veterinary medicine, veterinary technology or related field, with online/blended teaching experience. 3) Clinical and/or handling experience with exotic and/or laboratory animals (i.e. small mammals, avian, reptiles) and large animals (i.e. horses, cattle, goats). |
Physical Requirements | 1) Have sufficient hearing ability to respond appropriately to students, patients, clients, and coworkers; provide accurate patient assessment; and recognize alarms and signals. 2) Have sufficient visual acuity to allow for patient assessment from a distance, read English in regular to extra fine print on pharmaceutical labels and graduations on an insulin syringe. 3) Have sufficient verbal ability to effectively communicate instructions and directions to students and coworkers in a classroom, laboratory, and clinical setting. 4) Have sufficient physical strength to handle equipment and animals up to 50#; transfer patient or equipment from cages, tables, storage areas, cabinets, and counters without physical impairment; and stand, walk, crawl, or kneel for prolonged periods of time. 5) Have sufficient physical coordination to quickly be able to get in and out of cages and stalls, and maneuver with animals and equipment within a confined area. 6) Have sufficient manual dexterity to allow for handling of small objects and controls, palpation of muscles and/or bony prominences, placement of IV catheters and performance of venipuncture, administration of oral and parenteral medications, and monitoring patients. |
Required Degree, License or Certifications | 1) Current Texas LVT or Texas DVM 2) Annual CE required to maintain licensure. 3) Must be certified in CPR for Health Care Providers. May be satisfied post-hire. |
