Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The UTLC operates as the central unit supporting campus teaching and learning initiatives. The UTLC supports and advocates for a scholarly and effective teaching culture that: embraces innovation and inclusion, facilitates connections and leadership, and promotes an exploration of pedagogy and practice dedicated to learning. Additionally, the UTLC oversees Department Head/Chair/Director support in conjunction with the Office of the Provost; the Alumni Teaching Excellence Awards; the University Faculty Mentoring program; the University Academic Leadership training; and special projects related to teaching policy and improving academic outcomes (e.g. Teaching Effectiveness).
Position Summary
The UTLC Director provides strategic leadership for campus-wide teaching and learning support, professional development, and training for faculty and heads/chairs, aligning with Academic Affairs’ mission and initiatives. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the development, facilitation, and supervision of pan-university learning, pedagogy, and teaching initiatives and trainings; visioning and implementation of UTLC operations relative to University goals; and representing professional teaching and learning needs of the faculty community through service commitments, advisory capacities, and programmatic development. The Director collaborates with campus partners to support institutional priorities, particularly in enhancing teaching effectiveness and improving academic outcomes. Serving as a liaison, the Director fosters partnerships, advises on program development, and supports the Associate Vice Provost of Academic Affairs (AVPAA) in faculty development, special projects, and UTLC initiatives. Additionally, the Director supports the AVPAA/Dean of Undergraduate Studies in developing, facilitating, and managing faculty and educational development initiatives. This position reports to the Associate Vice Provost for Academic Affairs (AVPAA).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Terminal degree with five years of teaching experience in higher education
  • Demonstrated ability to build and facilitate relationships with faculty and partners across the university
  • Prior leadership experience in a teaching and learning unit
  • Prior experience in faculty and educational development
  • Prior experience supervising others
  • Prior experience leading the development of unit vision and assessment processes
  • Prior experience working with faculty on incorporating pedagogically effective practices in the classroom
  • Prior experience with course and program development
  • Prior experience with overseeing unit budgets
  • Emerging Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) Research profile
  • Ability to collaborate in a team and work independently
  • Demonstrated expertise in an established area of teaching best practice

  • Established Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SOTL) Research profile
