The holder of this position will be based in Shanghai and from that vantage point will promote the interests of NYU Shanghai, as well as NYU’s global network more generally. The Communications Director will set and guide the strategy for all marketing, digital communications, and public affairs strategies. The Communications Director will be responsible for planning and managing all communications messaging and activities, so as to strengthen relationships with NYU Shanghai’s many and varied stakeholders. The Communications Director will partner with senior colleagues within the university on a variety of strategic initiatives to support NYU Shanghai’s mission.
The main responsibilities include:
- To conceive and implement effective communications strategies for NYU Shanghai that will deepen understanding of, and sharpen demand for, the work of NYU Shanghai – in Washington Square, throughout NYU’s global network, and with audiences in China, the United States, and around the world.
- To build and oversee an effective public affairs team of native Chinese and native English speakers that will execute the strategies effectively, agilely, and authentically for each linguistic and cultural audience. The work will require the use of varied communications methods, tailored to the needs of different contexts including traditional media, social media, and the internet.
- To advise the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor of NYU Shanghai about how they can extend global understanding of, and appreciation for, NYU Shanghai.
- To work with deans, the Secretariat, and other academic leaders of NYU Shanghai to ensure that faculty achievements, speeches, conferences, and symposia, receive maximum visibility and ensure that NYU Shanghai is perceived as both a top research university and the “go-to global institution” in China that “convenes talent” to deepen understanding of academic, business, and public policy topics.
- To work with colleagues in New York to create new opportunities to tell NYU Shanghai’s story in New York, in Washington, D.C., and with key influencers across the United States.
- To work with colleagues in New York to develop a strategy for sharpening communications about the uniqueness and distinctive value of NYU’s global network.
The position will be a three year appointment, subject to renewal if mutually agreeable.
Education
- Bachelor's degree or above is required.
Experience
- Significant experience in public affairs, marketing, communications or a related field is required;
- Previous experience in both China and the United States is desirable;
- Previous experience in higher education is desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Exceptional writing skills in at least one language are required;
- Exceptional writing skills in both Chinese and English is desirable;
- Significant experience leading a team of colleagues is required;
- Significant experience managing complex projects is required;
- Significant experience working under pressure and managing crises is desirable.
