Director, Technology Commercialization

JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Innovation and Development, the Director of Technology Commercialization directs the activities of the Office to facilitate the exchange of technology between the institution and the for-profit sector. Assists UT Health San Antonio's community of innovators in achieving impactful outcomes from their research by guiding them through the complexities of intellectual property and commercialization.

Job Duties

  • Works closely with UT Health San Antonio faculty and institutional senior leaders to develop and implement a transparent, consistent process for the evaluation and marketing of institutional invention disclosures, patent protection, negotiation of license agreements and startup companies.
  • Provides leadership and management of business development and tech licensing staff with a strong emphasis on a team approach.
  • Implements and defines a strategy for educating faculty and staff on technology transfer.
  • Creates and develops opportunities for greater collaboration across the institution’s colleges, departments, and community partners.
  • Creates and coaches others to develop paths to market for the many technologies at UTHSA.
  • Coordinates with inventors, tech writers, and licensing team to prepare summaries of the business opportunities for new inventions and works to advertise technologies available for licensing.
  • Assists with planning and executing strategic marketing activities (scientific conferences, business community initiatives, online promotion and licensing platforms, external marketing vendors, and industry events) to promote university technologies; directs technologies to selected promotional channels.
  • Liaises with industry, investors, and entrepreneurs, as well as academic and non-profit organizations.
  • Reviews external communication efforts among the licensing and business development teams to facilitate consistent communication with potential licensees and partners.
  • Manage a portfolio of projects.
  • Provides high-level strategic departments on their projects and portfolios of projects.

    Education

    Bachelor’s degree in business, sciences, or a related field.

     

      Experience

    Ten (10) years of experience in technology transfer/commercialization within a higher education institution or demonstrated experience managing high-growth and entrepreneurial projects preferred.
