Job Summary

The Director of Student Rights and Responsibilities provides expert advice and consultation to senior leaders on high-profile student conduct issues. The Director is responsible for the administration and coordination of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) student conduct program under the supervision of the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Life. The Director offers alternative forms of conflict resolution, when appropriate, and acts as an advisor regarding complex policy, legal and regulatory issues in higher education. The Director plays a key role in coordinating the campus response to emergency situations involving students and assures compliance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The Director serves as the Student Life’s Student Conduct Officer in matters of non-academic student misconduct outlined in the UCSF Policy on Student Conduct and Discipline and works in consultation with the UCSF Professional Schools and Graduate Division. The Director is the campus expert in student conduct codes, policies, and regulations, represents campus leadership, and partners with community stakeholders focused on student conduct issues. The Director offers a spectrum of conflict resolution pathways that are educationally focused, restorative in nature, and are adaptable to meet the needs of individuals experiencing conflict. Collaborates with UCSF’s Restorative Justice Practices to support Restorative Justice practices and projects for students.

The Director is responsible for coordinating the campus’ response to students experiencing varying degrees of distress. The Director provides institutional responses to care for students and the overall community through the framework of the Student of Concern Committee. This position will serve as the Chair and non-clinical Case Manager with the Students of Concern Committee coordinating with Student Health and Counseling, Student Disability Services, Student Conduct, Financial Aid, UCSF Police Department, Threat Management Team, Legal Counsel, Student Life, and other administrators as appropriate to address the needs of students who are experiencing distress in areas that may include academics, psychological, economic, discipline, family relationships, social adjustment. This will be done through assessments, consultations, interventions, referrals, and follow-up services. The Director fields calls, emails, and referrals regarding distressed students; responds to student of concern cases. The position is non-counseling and non-therapeutic


Department Description

Student Life is a campus-wide student resource, supporting student initiatives, encouraging involvement in campus life, and serving as a primary liaison to students. Student Life supports student success through various programs and services that include First Generation Support Services, Veteran and Military Support Services, Basic Needs and Food Security for Students, and student involvement, Restorative Justice Programs, Student Disabilities Services, etc.

Student Life is housed in the Student Success Center (SSC). The SSC functions as a hub for centralized campus student services, including Student Life, Learning Resource Services (LRS), Student Disability Services (SDS), and the Office of Career and Professional Development (OCPD). We are a campus community resource offering friendly services, building partnerships, and enhancing the campus experience. We bring existing University programs and services to students, develop diverse and innovative programs and activities that enhance the quality of student life.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • 7-10 years relevant progressive experience         
  • Advanced knowledge of common organizational- or research-specific and other computer application programs
  • Expert knowledge in the specialist subject area – Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) 
  • In-depth knowledge and facility with FERPA laws, particularly health and safety exemptions that allow communications to parents and others
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and influence, both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable policy analysis techniques
  • Advanced analytical / problem-solving skills
  • Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes
  • Ability to collaborate and interact successfully with a variety of leaders and constituencies
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality
  • Thorough knowledge of organizational or initiative processes, protocols, and procedures

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent education and experience
  • Advanced project management skills
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating programing for graduate students, ideally with a specific focus on diversity
  • A strong working knowledge of HIPAA privacy laws in order to coordinate crisis management
  • actions and reduce campus liability
  • Familiarity with violence prevention best practices at universities; and all relevant federal, state, and local laws and campus/University policies
