Department Summary
The Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) is a unique residential program for high school-aged Texas students who are high achievers interested in mathematics and science. While living on campus in McConnell Hall, students in this two-year program complete a rigorous academic curriculum of college coursework at the University of North Texas (UNT), with instruction by university faculty. There are no high school courses taught, but students enjoy many of the activities of high school and the company of age mates who are intellectual peers.
Position Overview
Plan, implement, and coordinate all aspects of the Student Life Program for the Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science including staff supervision, student discipline, student activities, new student orientation, administration of the residence hall and handling of emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in related field and four years of closely related professional experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Extensive knowledge of issues and activities related to assigned program areas.
• Knowledge and skills to professionally and effectively counsel and mentor students.
• Strong ability to establish successful working relationships and to communicate effectively with students, faculty, and staff orally and in writing.
• Demonstrated ability in organizational planning, budgeting, and supervisory and leadership skills.
• Knowledge of University and external rules and policies related to the assigned program areas and Student Development in general.
• Knowledge of safety and security precautions related to work performed and work supervised.

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience working with student body comprised of minors.
• Excellent public speaking skills.
• Experience managing code of conduct and student discipline.

Monday-Friday 8-5 with occasional weekends and evenings as needed.

Job Duties


o
Collaborate with dean and associate deans to foster creativity and excellence in non-academic settings. Attend and actively participate in leadership meetings.
o
Develop plans and support extracurricular activities of an intellectual nature (e.g. Science Fairs, Hackathons, etc.)
o
Collaborate with housing staff to develop community and student activities in TAMS. Meet with Housing leadership weekly and coordinate staff responsibilities.
o
Maximize the offerings of the existing UNT RHA program and bring additional programming options to McConnell Hall.
o
Collaborate with dean of students, meet regularly with UNT Dean of Students and Housing to review all disciplinary issues regarding TAMS residence hall students.
o
Develop external partnerships to create opportunities for student development and engagement Engage companies and other academic institutions to develop new opportunities for students (e.g. Cisco or TWU)
o
Lead staff in managing clubs, external competitions (e.g. Robotics), and coordinating community service.
o
Participate in or lead special events. Present to prospective students and families during Preview and Interview Day. Articulate clearly what to expect with regard to student life at the academy.
o
Develop and lead summer and fall orientations.
o
Student policy: write or edit materials related to student life and policies. Give accurate information and represent the academy in a positive light.
o
Implement student discipline fairly, documenting disciplinary actions. Have genuine effort to respond consistently to policy violations with similar consequences.
o
Provide leadership for Student Life staff. Comply with UNT hiring policy and procedures for hiring, evaluation, dismissal, etc.
o
Develop training plans for staff, and train trainers (e.g. Hall Directors and Assistant Directors of Student Live), and oversee training provided at the start of each semester.
o
Meet with staff weekly.
o
Develop guidelines for student organizations appropriate for gifted and talented students in residential college setting. Soliciting and implementing feedback from staff a minimum of 2 months prior to printing the handbook.
o
Spend time with students, both during office appointments and informally in the hall or cafeteria or at academy events.
o
Develop and implement protocols to allow for prompt, efficient response to emergency situations. Oversee emergency response and documentation. Be available by phone for after-hour emergencies. Train staff on when to contact appropriate support systems (e.g. 911, Academy Psychologist, medical services). Interface with emergency protocol established in the UNT residence life system, and inform the Dean of all incidents that are even a possibility of high profile.
