Position Summary

The University of Denver is seeking an experienced, driven, and passionate partner to join our Career & Professional Development team as the Director of Student Employment. As part of Chancellor Haefner’s vision to create an innovative 4-Dimensional student experience on campus, the University of Denver is investing in growth and realignment of the Student Employment office to offer enhanced service to both students and their supervisors. The Director will work with a community of talented professionals to develop and manage this innovative direction by strategically creating meaningful learning opportunities for student employees and training supervisors to provide high quality experiences.

This position reports directly to the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Career & Professional Development. The Director of Student Employment is dedicated to building a best-in-class student employment program at the University of Denver, impacting 3000 student employees and 550 supervisors across departments and divisions on-campus. The Director develops strategy and manages all functions of Student Employment, including liaising between human resources and student employment, supporting supervisors in developing/marketing positions, training supervisors to provide excellent employment experiences, and overseeing training and processes for student employees to ensure high quality learning experiences.

Additionally, this leader will manage data collection efforts on key metrics to assess program success. The Director of Student Employment will lead coordination efforts with critical campus partners such as Financial Aid, Human Resources & Inclusive Community, and the Office of Graduate Education, including convening an ongoing working group that will inform the rollout of the program across campus to ensure strong alignment across many stakeholder units. The Director functions as a key member of the Career & Professional Development leadership team and will hire and supervise a Human Resources Partner and an Assistant Director of Student Employment, overseeing the functions associated with those roles.

This position is funded through 6/30/25 through an internally funded innovation grant, after which time there will be a review of programmatic outcomes to assess permanent position funding.

Essential Functions

Strategic Leadership of Student Employment

  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for a high-quality student employment program at the University of Denver, impacting 3000 student employees, including undergraduate and graduate students, and 550 supervisors across all divisions and departments on-campus.
  • Hire, train, and supervise an Assistant Director for Student Employment and a Human Resources Partner.
  • Oversee student employment job fair to aid campus departments in filling available positions while creating awareness for students.
  • Consult with staff and student supervisors across campus to help solve problems and answer questions regarding student employment best practices.
  • Create protocols for utilizing the career development technology for student employment job postings and determine efficient workflows for ensuring a positive experience for students and supervisors.
  • Collect and track student employment data including job postings and applicant numbers, and student employee and supervisor engagement. Work with the Director of CPD Business Information and Systems to research correlation of student outcomes and student employment participation.
  • Submit quarterly updates and annual reports on Student Employment progress to the Chancellor. Present to progress to the Chancellor’s cabinet as requested.

Human Resources Operations

  • Lead daily operations and execution of professional development programs for student employees and supervisors as well as its associated human resources functions such as workforce planning, recruiting & hiring, onboarding, compensation reviews, employee relations, and performance evaluations.
  • Develop and implement a centralized compensation pay scale and position classifications for student employees.
  • Create and initiate a compensation review process for student employees as needed and provide yearly scale updates in alignment with city and state guidance as well as peer institutions.
  • Implement performance management system and oversee the performance management process to ensure consistent application of the institution’s performance management guidelines.
  • Oversee interpretation of human resources policies, financial aid policies, and graduate assistant policies for student employees and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal labor and employment law.
  • Ensure timely management of employee relations counseling and guidance to student employees and supervisors across divisions, in partnership and advisement from the Human Resources and Inclusive Excellence.
  • Act as a strategic partner with Financial Aid, Office of Graduate Education, and Human Resources and Inclusive Community to ensure cohesive alignment and guidance with institutional processes and guidance.

Training & Professional Development

  • Identify key competencies for student employees and supervisor development as well as ensure programmatic framework positively impacts learning outcomes.
  • Develop curriculum and present to supervisors on developing student employees and providing high quality experiences as well as comprehensive policies and processes to include recruiting & hiring, on-boarding, evaluation, separation, and rewards and recognition.
  • Oversee student employee orientation that prepares students to be successful in their campus roles while setting goals to enhance professional skill development and professional development programs for student employees to enhance professional skills needed to be successful in campus jobs and beyond.
  • Oversee the develop of professional development programs for student employees to enhance professional skills needed to be successful in campus jobs and beyond.

Partnerships & University Citizenship

  • Convene and lead a Student Employment Committee that guides the direction of the office to ensure comprehensive organizational success and coordination.
  • Partner closely with divisional leadership, managers, supervisors, and employees across campus to improve working relationships, build morale, and increase productivity and employee retention.
  • Communicate with campus leaders and student supervisors on program goals and successes.
  • Host student employment job fair to aid campus departments in filling available positions while creating awareness for students.

  • Strong background and understanding of training and development
  • Knowledge of student development and/or student career development
  • Strong relationship management skills
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and equity
  • Demonstrated expertise building new relationships and maintaining them with employers, students, faculty, and administrators

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education or work experience (Veterans with equivalent combination of military certification/education and experience may substitute for the degree qualification)
  • 5 years of related experience in human resources, career services, student affairs, or a related field
  • Supervisory experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in human resources, communications, student affairs, or a related field
  • 2 years of experience supervising professional staff
  • Relationship management experience
  • Experience in visioning, planning, designing, and implementing innovative programs
  • Experience in strategic planning and successful execution of strategic objectives
  • Experience creating and delivering high quality and engaging trainings for a variety of stakeholders

Working Environment

  • Standard office environment.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.
  • Eligible for hybrid work.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
  • Occasionally required to move about the office/campus with the capability of transporting objects up to 20 lbs. with assistance.

Work Schedule
Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., some nights and weekends as required

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 13.

Salary Range:
The salary range for this position is $80,000 - $105,000.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate’s sex or any other protected status.
