Job Description

The Center for the Future of Arizona (CFA) seeks a Director, Strategic Marketing and Communications to lead the organization’s communications, branding and marketing efforts. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the organization achieves its mission to bring Arizonans together to create a stronger and brighter future for the state. 

The Director, Strategic Marketing and Communications is responsible for overseeing a team of professionals who plan, develop, produce, and deploy digital, print and broadcast strategic communications that align with CFA’s vision and values, and touch every aspect of the organization, including research, programs, development and partnerships.

The director identifies and develops compelling stories that reflect key themes and organization priorities, and engages with paid, earned and owned media to promote CFA achievements and advance the organization’s visibility and reputation. 

As a member of the CFA leadership team, the director works with senior leadership to set and meet strategic goals relating to communications, marketing and brand management for the organization.

This position oversees the marketing, communications and creative services personnel, manages communications workflows, and ensures the quality, consistency and effectiveness of all external and internal communications for CFA.

This position reports to CFA’s Executive Vice President and works collaboratively with other members and affiliates of the organization.

Essential Duties

  • Develop, implement and manage the overall integrated strategic marketing and communications plan in support of CFA’s mission, vision and values.
  • Direct and oversee communications functions, including advertising, public relations, digital marketing, social media and website content management. 
  • Collaborate with leadership and staff to recognize and respond to internal and external communications opportunities and solutions.
  • Provide communications support in the form of communication strategies and tactical plans, written pieces, speeches, presentations, videos and key stakeholder meetings with external audiences. 
  • Work collaboratively across the organization to craft, edit and develop content for a wide range of print and electronic communications, including press releases, newsletters and e-news, brochures, website, etc. 
  • Ensures consistency in style, language and design of all communication.
  • Oversee and manage the communications budget.
  • Measure and assess the impact of marketing and communications activities. Oversees benchmarking and performance tracking. Uses data to make decisions on future communications.
  • Support management and staff with communications related training and other tasks, including support with brand journalism and mission story telling. 
  • Serve as CFA’s primary media contact within AZ and beyond.
  • Recommend audience development and engagement strategies. Helps create multi-level, multi-modal spaces for public and leadership dialogue.
  • Monitor emerging technologies in marketing and communications, and serve as an advocate for their inclusion in CFA strategic plans.
  • Manage a close working relationship with internal and external partners for the effective planning, implementation and management of integrated strategic marketing and communications.
  • Ensure compliance with CFA brand objectives and alignment of message across the organization.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in a related field and six (6) years of related administrative experience OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

  • Eight years of related experience that includes five years of supervisory experience
  • Experience contributing to cultivating a welcoming, inclusive and equitable workplace. 
  • Experience with leading and managing others in a creative and deadline-driven environment.
  • Evidence of effective written and verbal skills; extensive writing and editing experience in all media.
  • Experience with media relations, locally and national.
  • Experience speaking on behalf of an organization to media and other public audiences, including experience with crisis communications
  • Experience leading the creative process and managing projects from start to finish
  • Experience developing or overseeing digital marketing strategies
  • Evidence of having a track record as an implementer who thrives on effectively managing multiple streams of work concurrently. 
  • Experience in relationship building with a sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all internal and external partners.
  • Experience mentoring and developing skills in others
  • Experience in being a self-starter, able to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Experience leading entrepreneurial and proactive approaches to problem solving 
  • Experience working in a non-profit organization.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook) and Salesforce (or other CRM applications).
  • Experience with Salesforce Pardot or other content management platforms (MailChimp, Constant Contact, etc.)

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse.
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time.
  • Travel, both in state and out of state, involving operation of a motor vehicle.
