Job Summary
The Division of Biology and Biological Engineering (BBE) at Caltech is seeking a Director for our newly established Stem Cell and Embryo Engineering Center (SEEC). The SEEC is a center offering state-of-the-art stem cell and embryo manipulation techniques to enable research of faculty across the BBE Division.
This is an Essential Reporting position. An employee designated as essential reporting has essential job skills that are needed for response and recovery and is expected to report to Campus as soon as possible.
Essential Job Duties
  • The Embryo and Stem Cell Engineering Center will carry out state-of-the-art techniques for the field of mammalian stem cell and embryo research, including stem cell derivation, culture, genome editing, electroporation, cryopreservation of gametes, cloning, chimeras, embryo transfer to foster mothers, microinjections and live-cell imaging.
  • The Director of the Center will use their personal skills in stem cell and embryo manipulations to enable the above objectives. The Director will interact with faculty members to devise and supervise appropriate experimental strategies.
  • In addition to mice, the Director will develop experimental stem cell and embryo approaches applicable to human and other mammalian species.
  • The Director will train and supervise staff members working in the Resource Center toward the common goal of ensuring the Center is at the forefront of new developments. They will contribute to making decisions on hiring, promotions, salary changes, performance evaluations, and terminations.
  • The Director will oversee day-to-day operations and administration of the Resource Center and will ensure that all Resource Center operating procedures meet the requirements of the Office of Laboratory Animal Resources (OLAR) and Federal and State regulations governing the care and treatment of animals in research.
  • Coordinating with overseeing the Center Faculty Principal Investigator and Division Administration, the Director will manage and administer a charge-back system for services and participate in choosing and purchasing equipment in the development of the Center.
  • The Director is a staff position which reports to a responsible faculty member and to a faculty steering committee that provides oversight of the Center.

Experience Required
  • Ph.D. or MD Degree in a relevant field of biology.
  • Experience and knowledge of methods for stem cell culture, derivation and genetic manipulation, oocyte and embryo culture and manipulation, electroporation, embryo transfer into foster mothers, and molecular biology for CRISPR mutagenesis.
  • Experience in management at either research project or facility level.
  • Ability to develop and maintain housekeeping and safety protocols and to establish procedures for maintaining pathogen-free rodents.
  • Understanding of guidelines and standards related to the treatment of laboratory animals.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to effectively collaborate with research groups inside and external to Caltech.
  • Ability to supervise and train assigned staff.
  • Budget planning and accounting skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in mammalian developmental biology or stem cell biology with postdoctoral experience.
