Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) University Advancement (UA) is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to join our team as a Director or Senior Director, Development for the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine (UNR Med). This individual will play a pivotal role in soliciting, securing, and stewarding principal gifts in support of UNR Med programs and projects.

The Director or Senior Director, Development, leads major gift fundraising initiatives to meet the financial needs of UNR Med, including scholarships, endowments, planned gifts, expendable funds, and professorships/chairs. UNR Med educational programs, research and other initiatives require support.  The position engages in strategic, personalized interactions with donors, cultivating meaningful relationships and securing support at the $100,000 - $5 million level. The position will lead efforts to engage with and partner with alumni, facilitate the UNR Med Alumni Association, and develop meaningful relationships with current students and alumni. The incumbent will create and implement a comprehensive, multi-year fundraising plan to increase philanthropic support for UNR Med, provide leadership to less senior development professionals both with UNR Med and UA, and actively engage with school leadership. The position reports to the Associate Vice President, Advancement and Campaign with a dual reporting line to the Dean, UNR Med.

Key Responsibilities

  • Solicit gifts with emphasis on those ranging from $100,000 - $5,000,000 in alignment with the SDO's prospect pool as identified through data analytics.

  • Aggressively identify new major and planned gift prospects by developing and executing long-range and short-range strategy, producing a continuous stream of donors capable of making significant gifts

  • Manage stewardship

  • Develop and execute strategic fundraising plans to achieve established metrics and monetary goals.

  • Independently manage a portfolio of principal gift donor prospects, exercising a high level of independent judgment and expertise in the solicitation process.

  • Collaborate with upper-level University administrators, including the president, provost, vice presidents, and deans, during principal gift discussions.

  • Mentor junior development officers and prepare senior campus leaders to present fundraising proposals effectively.

  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of UNR Med's fundraising priorities, goals, and objectives.

Required Qualifications

**Candidates will be hired at the level comparable to their experience, knowledge, skills and abilities**

Director

Bachelor’s Degree with four (4) years of related professional work experience OR

Master’s Degree with two (2) years of related professional work experience.

Related Experience: Successful professional experience is required, preferably in higher education fundraising, non-profit or in a related field which requires strong relationship-building and outcome driven components or related experience. 


Senior Director

Bachelor's Degree with five (5) years of related professional work experience OR

Master's Degree with three (3) years of related professional work experience

Related Experience:

  • Substantial fundraising experience which includes demonstrable experience with individuals in either a higher education, athletic development operation, sales team, or other profession that required the candidate to uncover prospects, make outreach, and meet face-to-face to cultivate and solicit prospects. 

  • Experience with fundraising databases, contact reports, proposal preparation and moves management.

  • Experience with a metric-driven, results-oriented environment.

  • Experience with face to face solicitations of $100k or higher

Preferred Qualifications

  • An experienced development professional with ten years of experience, including experience within academic medicine or healthcare fundraising

  • Experience developing and implementing a robust strategic development plan.

Schedule or Travel Requirements

  • Frequent local travel

  • Occasional out of state travel

  • Variable work schedule to include nights and weekends

Director – Compensation Grade C

Senior Director – Compensation Grade D

Grants-in-aid for Faculty Employees
