Director Risk Management

Position Summary

 

At Stony Brook Medicine the Director of Risk Management Manage oversees the Risk Management team whom actively participates in the defense of claims, mitigate liability exposure, and analyze adverse occurrences and near misses to promote process improvement and excellent health care in a safe environment. The Director, who reports to the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), will promote Risk Management collaboration, and consultation to reduce liability exposure and facilitate safe care and excellent patient quality outcomes.

 

 

Duties of a Director of Risk Management may include the following but are not limited to:

 

  • Responsible for the oversight of the Risk Management Department functions including claims management, patient occurrence analysis, risk management education, patient safety activities, and regulatory compliance.
  • Provide 24/7 risk management consultation to the institution.
  • Provides oversight for the in-house event reporting system.
  • Participates in policy & procedure development
  • Serves as a Risk Management resource to all clinical and support departments
  • Responsible for oversight of day to day Department operations
  • Conducts root cause analysis (RCA) investigations and submits to NYS DOH via NYPORTS
  • Assumes on 24/7 on-call rotation for the Department in conjunction with Risk Management Coordinators
  • Active participation on committees directed toward promoting quality of care and regulatory compliance
  • Works with external Patient Safety Organization (PSO) to implement risk reduction strategies
  • Confer with SUNY legal counsel for legal advice, regulatory compliance, privileged matters, and contemporary legal issues in health care.
  • Promote Risk Management visibility through regular interactions and informal rounding with staff and faculty.
  • Provide guidance to staff regarding consent matters, foregoing life-sustaining treatment, advance directives, confidentiality, and disclosure of unanticipated outcomes.
  • Integrate Risk Processes across Stony Brook Medicine to include Stony Brook Southampton Hospital & Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital.

 

 

 

 

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications:   

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing or another health-related field
  • NYS RN, NP or PA Professional Licensure
  • 5 years or more Risk Management experience
  • 5 years supervisory/administrative experience.  In Lieu of 5 years supervisory/administrative experience, 15 years or more of Risk Management experience.

 

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:  

 

  • Master’s Degree in health-related field.
  • 10 years or more Risk Management experience

  • Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
  • Successfully complete a 4 panel drug screen*
  • Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre employment screenings.
  • Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).

Failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

*The hiring department will be responsible for any fee incurred for examination.
