Minimum Requirements:

Ph.D. in a related area and seven years of applied research experience in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must have five or more years of experience in infectious disease research under ABSL-3 containment. Grade 10 (Salaried)

Position Description:

The Director in charge of Research Services functions as a member of the scientific and operations leadership group in the Center for Predictive Medicine (CPM).  This position is responsible for supervision of research technicians who work in this unit. The position requires a self-motivated, talented research manager with more than 5 years of experience working under BSL-3 containment and more than 5 years of relevant post-doctoral laboratory experience.  The Director is a senior member of the research team who, in addition to responsibility for design and execution of sophisticated biomedical research projects also has responsibility for training and supervision of students, postdoctoral fellows and research technicians to achieve proficiency in high containment research practices.  The Director must have expert-level skills in biomedical laboratory research.  They must be prepared to work a flexible schedule, sometimes after hours and on the weekends. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and operation of preclinical model services unit.
  • Strategically review and implement processes and process improvement.
  • Direct and manage the in vivo research operations component of the Shared Resources Group.
  • Direct and supervise research staff and coordinate staff schedules.
  • Direct and supervise Research Scientist(s).
  • Coordinate activities with the RBL vivarium manager.
  • Draft animal use proposals, ensuring compliance with IACUC proposals and other institutional policies and procedures.
  • Instruct and train on infectious disease awareness, proper use of PPE, and safe practices when working in A/BSL-3 biocontainment.
  • Coordinate and manage complex research activities.
  • Coordinate and assist with A/BSL-3 operations including routine maintenance and decontamination of laboratory spaces.
  • Collaborate on proposal development and facilitate obtaining preliminary data for grants and contracts.
  • Prepare annual operations reports, inclusive of the preclinical model service unit.
  • Provide scientific expertise to determine potential new directions for offerings from the preclinical model services unit.
  • Provide Project Management Support for in vivo research projects.
  • Collaborate with multiple departments to manage and ensure successful research projects execution and outcomes from external and internal clients.
  • Oversee development, implementation, and maintenance of document control library.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and revision of Standard Operating Procedures and/or study protocols for research projects.  This may include development of SOPs for advanced instrumentation and testing parameters to ensure success of each project.
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager in charge of finance and administration to prepare budgets for Service Center research projects. 
  • Oversee the preparation of study reports for Service Center clients and development and maintenance of data base for tracking studies.
  • Develop and oversee records for all studies.
  • Provide support for submission of IBC and IACUC protocols.
  • Supervise and train research personnel. 
  • Provide Scientific Research Support fori n vivo research projects. 
  • Provide scientific leadership for research technicians, research scientists, students and postdoctoral trainees working on in vivo studies at the RBL. 
  • Analyze data and prepare study reports and scientific manuscripts for studies at the RBL.
Preferred Qualifications

Department of Justice clearance for access to Select Agent(s) and/or Toxin(s).

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
