The Director serves as a member of the Fralin Life Sciences Institute (FLSI) senior leadership team and is responsible for developing strategic approaches to help advance and sustain research service facilities and collaborations that support Institute and other campus research infrastructure. The Director manages research service facility leadership and coaches them on facility management and professional development. The Director engages in creative pathways to further define, expand, refine, diversify, and promote service capabilities and those whom the facilities serve, while initiating and nurturing productive collaborations/relationships with federal funding agencies, corporate sponsors/partners, and foundations. The Director strategizes with research service facility leadership and the senior leadership team to develop approaches for representing the FLSI in the scientific, technological, and public-private engagement communities, as well as forging relationships with other academic institutions and the private sector.
Responsibilities Include:
• Guidance and oversight of FLSI research service facilities (e.g., genomics, mass spectrometry, imaging).
• Career coaching and supervision of FLSI research service facility leadership, with an eye toward a culture of networking with external research service facility leaders.
• Collaborate with FLSI and other university personnel to obtain, coordinate, and direct data analytics and assessment of FLSI research service facility activities for dissemination to stakeholders, collaborators, and partners, as well as use outcomes to shape capabilities.
• Develop and deliver presentations (written and oral) for diverse audiences on aspects of FLSI research service facilities and associated capabilities.
• Provide timely research-related workshops that highlight FLSI research service facilities and associated capabilities.
• Collaborate with FLSI and other university personnel to create sustainable data management capabilities and data sharing workflows.
• Team up with others, as principal investigator or co-principal investigator, to develop and submit grant proposals for funding/expanding FLSI research services infrastructure.
• Proactively develop new research service opportunities in the context of strategic analysis of current and anticipated needs through the lens of data analytics and assessment.
• Work with FLSI and other university personnel to develop federally compliant rate structures for research facility services, and ensure mechanisms are in place/adhered to for timely billing for work performed.
• Ensure compliance of FLSI research service facilities with all health and safety requirements.
