Position Description:

Job Summary

The University of Louisville is seeking a new director for the Sequencing Technology Center (STC), an important core facility serving the University of Louisville. The STC, formed in 2021 by combining existing genomics cores, has quickly become a leading genomics service provider in the southeast and has a broad user base from both UofL and external investigators, both academic and industrial. The STC is poised to continue this growth in the coming years, with broad support across campus and with UofL leadership. The director of the STC will provide day to day guidance of core operations, with a primary focus on developing strategic vision for continuing Center growth, implementation of new cutting  edge technologies, engagement with existing and burgeoning research programs, and interfacing with University Research and Innovation leadership. The director will oversee all aspects of the core's operations, including the design and execution of research protocols, the management of budgets, introduction and presentation of STC capabilities to new research teams, Centers, and institutions, as well as the hiring, training and management of core personnel. The core director will provide the scientific and technical expertise for fulfilling user-based projects utilizing the currently installed sequencing  platforms, which include systems from Illumina, Pacific Biosciences and 10X Genomics. The director will work closely with user and administrative advisory groups to ensure a high level of customer service and operations transparency.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Interface with University leadership as a flagship member of the Louisville Research Cores organization.
  • Develop short-, mid-, and long-term vision and goals for STC growth and opportunity across UofL and the region.
  • Direct STC operations and manage staff to  ensure excellent customer relations.
  • Mange the financial operations to ensure STC viability.
  • Develop cost models for current and future services.
  • Manage onboarding of new equipment/technologies.
  • Provide marketing of STC capabilities to potential customers; maintain outward facing collateral, including website.
  • Provide project support to investigators using and/anticipating using the core services.
  • Keep core capabilities up to date with advances in the genomics field.
  • Submit large equipment grants to funding agencies to support new equipment purchases.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in Genomics and or Bioinformatics, or related field.
  • Expertise in Bioinformatics related to DNA, RNA and protein analyses.
  • Expertise in wet lab aspects related to library construction for analysis  of next-generation sequencers.

Compensation will be commensurate to candidate experience.
