The Miller Wellness Center at South Dakota State University (SDSU) is seeking our next Director of Recreation and Fitness. This leadership role will lead the integration of recreation and wellness into the student-life experience. This position is located in Brookings, South Dakota and is a 12-month, full-time, benefits-eligible position. This is an internal only posting and is open to all current, regular SDSU employees.
The Miller Wellness Center’s mission statement, ‘Enriching the quality of life is our passion!’ Over 40 years, the Miller Wellness Center has had the same passion to provide quality services and programs to our students, faculty, staff, and Brookings Area Community. The Brookings Wellness Program began in conjunction with the Brookings Hospital in 1980, which is now the Miller Wellness Center. We strive to be a holistic facility by focusing on seven dimensions of wellness through the student health clinic, counseling center, Jackrabbit Pharmacy, nutrition services, intramurals, group fitness, aquatics, sport clubs, outdoor programs and HEROH, our peer education group. SDSU is one of the first facilities in the country to house a Student Health Clinic and Recreation opportunities under one roof.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Recreation & Fitness Director position is committed to the creation of innovative programs through collaboration and supported services that embrace individual uniqueness, foster a culture of inclusive excellence that supports both broad and specific diversity initiatives and meets the holistic recreation, health and wellness of students, faculty, staff, and community. Operates with a strong sense of mission, community relationships, and purpose while leading a large, complex organization with over 100 employees. Examples of this work include but are not limited to strategic planning; operations; campus and community relations management; financial responsibility of $3.1M; and human resource planning, stewardship, and assessment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Master’s degree required in Recreation, Administration, Leadership, Business, or a related field by start date;
  • At least 5 years of related experience in recreation, administration, leadership, health or business; 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead diverse groups of individuals employing flexibility in management techniques;
  • Knowledge and ability to effectively handle public relations;
  • Ability to creatively plan and budget programs;
  • Skilled in program needs assessment and evaluation processes;

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Strong time management, communication, and supervisory skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students, student organizations, faculty/student committees, government agencies, and community groups;
  • Experience with strategic planning, assessment, and goal setting;
  • Demonstrated collaboration & leadership;
  • Working knowledge of contract negotiation and preparation.
