The UNC SOM Clinical Research Alliance (CRA) coordinates large multi-center trials generating evidence to advance treatments that serve North Carolinians and beyond. Working with the leading scientific experts at UNC in partnership with the National Institutes of Health and Pharma, and national academic institutions, the CRA provides full-service coordination through pre to post award activities.
Activities within the CRA include proposal management and submission, protocol and CRF development, IRB and FDA submissions, site training and certification, recruitment and enrollment, data capture and management, study monitoring and safety reporting, and study compliance and quality for large scale Phase II IND studies and more.
Position Summary
The primary purpose of Director, Proposal Development and Scientific Writing is to support the UNC research mission by providing the needed knowledge, experience, leadership, and communication skills to liaise with national and internationally recognized Principal and Primary Investigators (PIs), to identify and secure funding for coordinating clinical trials as well as fulfill the communication requirements for funded projects. In support of this, the position will support investigators and others from UNC and across the state and country, including individuals from non-profits, industry partners, public private partnerships, to write proposals to submit to funding sponsors. Grant opportunities are vast and will include federal, non-profit and for profit. The position will work with research investigators and others as a scientific liaison, extending the capacities of the PIs to: identify the best teams for funding opportunities; identify required components for the proposal; prepare, draft, and edit proposals; translate the research into application; and keep teams on track so as to meet the goal at hand. Additional science/medical writing activities may also include protocol and publications, Investigational Brochure, case report forms, consents/assents, reports, and online communication. This position may also provide grants management and career development training. The position needs a high level of independent thinking and decision making to ensure that the research program operations stays on track and mitigates the risk of delay in deliverables. This position entails delivering consistently high-quality insights based on mastery of medical communication skills and advanced knowledge/training in a biomedical field, facilitating collaboration and communication, along with exceptional editing and time management skills. The position will meet independently with lead PIs to provide expertise and scientific input on specific aims and approach for multi-component grant applications.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or professional-level background in sponsored research administration, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
In addition to strong scientific and medical writing skills, the incumbent should have demonstrated ability in paying attention to details, thinking independently, speaking confidently, building and maintaining relationship rapport, time management and deadline adherence skills. Expertise in identification of funding sources, grants research, program and budget development, and preparation of complex written and electronic grant submissions. Possess excellent people, organizational and verbal interpersonal skills. Ability to work as a member of a team and independently and effectively across departments schools, handling multiple projects, and under the pressure of deadlines for grant opportunities. Extensive experience in analysis and interpretation of the regulations, policies, and procedures of federal grant agencies, non-profit and for-profit sponsors, and the ability to communicate these regulations, policies, and procedures clearly and effectively to investigators. Demonstrated ability to edit scientific writing (eg, Research Strategy, Abstract, Objectives) for clarity, write non research components (eg, Human Subjects), and develop accurate figures and tables from complex concepts. Must be able to administer and manage large-scale projects in accordance with federal agency. Strong communicator with at least 5 years of experience in obtaining funding and grantsmanship, is a must.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Masters or PhD or MD PhD in health affairs, public health, biomedical or related field.
