Job Summary

The UCSF Office of Research, led by the Vice Chancellor for Research (VCR), focuses on the academic mission of UCSF, with a particular emphasis on academic research operations and science policy. The Office of Research is seeking an innovative and resourceful Program Manager (PM) who is a strong leader with significant research program and project management experience to serve as Director, Office of the Vice Chancellor of Research (VCR). This office supports the direct activities of the VCR; these range from the strategic and innovative to the operational and administrative. The successful incumbent will do both types of activities well.

The Incumbent will work closely with the VCR to direct and administer the successful implementation of initiatives, taskforces, and other activities of the Office of the VCR. The incumbent will also provide the VCR with general oversight and awareness of the activities within the Office of Research’s many operational units. The incumbent will also assist the VCR in administering evaluation and quality improvement efforts across the Office of Research. In this work, the incumbent will work closely with leaders across the operational units of the Office of Research.

The incumbent will be highly organized and will possess the ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner for multiple audiences. The incumbent will have outstanding interpersonal skills and a proven ability to build strong working relationships with stakeholders and lead groups. The incumbent will be able to work independently and be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously. The incumbent will demonstrate a high degree of self-motivation and an ability to problem-solve.

Department Description

The Office of Research provides leadership, direction, and management of campus-wide research administration, infrastructure and services and oversees the operations of the following units: International Research; Office of Sponsored Research which includes Research Management Services, the Office of Clinical Trials Activation, Government and Business Contracts and the Industry Contracts Division; Research Development Office; Research Resource Program; Institutional Animal Care and Use Program; Human Research Protection Program (HRPP); the Laboratory Animal Resource Center (LARC); Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S), and the Office of Clinical Research and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI).


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Eight (8) years of relevant experience and/or equivalent experience/training
  • At least five years of experience hiring and managing high performing employees
  • Thorough knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; accounting and payroll
  • Excellent ability to establish metrics for department and employee goals
  • Highly skilled in using discretion and maintaining confidentiality
  • Excellent project management skills, including the capability of managing capital projects
  • Thorough knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs
  • Excellent skills to work collaboratively and act persuasively in sensitive situations; skills in conflict management techniques
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively lead, motivate and influence others and to develop and maintain high standards of customer service
  • Very strong ability to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution
  • Expert knowledge of common organizational- or research-specific and other computer application programs
  • Ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) and / or equivalent experience / training required
