Job Description

Facilities Development and Management, Office of the University Architect, seeks a Director to implement strategic institutional initiatives under the direction of the University Architect. Provide oversight and guidance to the Concept Group (Team Delta) and Team Leads with the preparation of comprehensive architectural programming, budget analysis and conceptual design work and supervision of design staff.  Meet regularly with OUA staff members to discuss challenges and solutions to maintain moral and provide excellent customer service. Guide the preparation of in-house architectural programming and/or coordinate outside consultants in the preparation of such. Manage the due-diligence analysis of existing buildings/areas and review project team reports to support comprehensive architectural programming statements. Manage staff or consultants during the Schematic Design and Design Development phases of projects. Develop Request-for-Qualification statements and make pre-submittal presentations to design consultants. Coordinate the assembly of design professional selection committees. Participate in the negotiation of professional design service contracts with outside consultants during the procurement process for projects. Manage the A/E Team as they provide A/E services to the enterprise. Maintain the Universities Project Design Guidelines with yearly updates required by coordination with FDM staff and subject matter experts.  Direct and lead special project as identified.

Salary Range

$123,000 - $129,000 annually commensurate of experience and education. ASU offers a comprehensive benefits package with the State of Arizona.


Essential Duties

Assist University Architect in day-to-day project related initiatives with specific emphasis on design intent of projects. Coordinate preparation of project update presentations for ASU leadership. Directly manage the preparation of comprehensive programming/planning/schematic design documents with Project Execution Team leaders and Conceptual Team members. Coordinate the preparation of pre-submittal presentations. Assist Director of Project Execution Teams with the inclusion of design intent directives on the update reports to Associate Vice-President of Facilities and Development Management. Supervise activities of subordinates. Develop process to update institutional design standards with particular emphasis on sustainability. Develop process to create a programming phase total project cost database. Develop process for customer service satisfaction follow-up surveys and improvement protocols. Develop process with the Facilities Management Department to integrate facilities condition assessments into programming/planning reports with an emphasis on potential cost impacts. Manage the A/E Team to provide continued service to the departments as necessary per the A/E team Coordinate and manage projects in accordance with Arizona Board of Regents policies. Assist with the preparation of conceptual budget estimates based on programming/schematic design documents with multiple resources. Negotiate fee with selected design professionals and prepare contract ensuring cost will be within Arizona Board of Regents guidelines. Review/resolve programming/planning document issues with the University Planner’s office and relevant stakeholders to submit comprehensive project scope documentation. Attend and represent the University at meetings for compliance with the Arizona Board of Regents and University policies and standards. Review work of consulting architect(s) to ensure that University standards and contractual requirements are met. Update University Project Design Guidelines as required to reflect change and improvements in the industry as agreed to by University subject matter experts. Coordinate development and constant improvement of OUA staff. Use ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.

DAYS AND SCHEDULE:  Monday – Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND eight (8) years of related administrative experience, which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Twelve (12) years of related administrative experience, which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.


Desired Qualifications

Evidence of a Bachelor's Degree in Architecture or related field

Fifteen (15) years of architectural experience

Registered as an Architect in the State of Arizona OR, Professional registration in another state with NCARB (National Council of Architectural Registration Boards) Certification and become a registered Architect in the State of Arizona within six (6) months after date of hire. 

Experience in 

  • Managing project teams/design professionals through all phases of a project.
  • Managing multiple projects and coordinating the work of design professionals to ensure compliance with the architectural program statement.
  • Drafting of conceptual architectural plans.
  • Organizing and coordinating the work of others.
  • Improvement of staff technical skills and project responsibilities.

Demonstrated knowledge of:

  • MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint software applications.
  • Sketch-Up electronic sketching software application.
  • PhotoShop software application.
  • Autocad or Revit software.
  • Architectural programming processes/protocols.
  • Architecture and architectural design principles, practices and techniques.
  • Building systems, materials and construction methods.
  • Federal and state facility Life Safety and International Building Code requirements.
  • Use of Means Cost Estimating, Uni-Format/other industry construction cost guides.
  • Requirements for acquiring professional design services and construction services in accordance with Arizona Revised Statutes and Arizona Board of Regents policy.
  • Structural, mechanical and electrical engineering systems as they pertain to overall building construction costs.

Working Environment

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.  Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.  Drive University vehicle and/or cart to campus site.

This position is located at the University Services Building, 1551 S. Rural Road, Tempe, AZ (on Rural Road south of Apache Blvd). 

This position requires that you must possess a valid Arizona driver's license (minimum of Class D) upon employment and maintain throughout employment.  Post-offer of employment, selected candidate must possess an acceptable driving record which is 5 or fewer points in the most recent 39-month period from date of hire.

This position is considered safety/security sensitive and will include a fingerprint check. Employment is contingent upon successful passing of all background, including fingerprint checks.

This position is dependent on the continuation of funding from a specific source other than state appropriations.  As such, this appointment may terminate when the funding is no longer available.
