Job Summary:

The Division of Diversity, Equity and Educational Achievement (DDEEA), the central convener and leader for campus-wide diversity and inclusion outcomes at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, is seeking the inaugural Director to lead the Office of Professional Development, Education, and Innovation. The Director will provide leadership in the development, implementation, and management of an office that provides capacity building programs and resources for the training and professional development of graduate students, faculty, and staff. As Director, the successful candidate will supervise staff, oversee the office budget, and support the Assistant Vice Provost for Strategic Equity, Diversity Inclusion, and Belonging Administration (SEDIBA) in setting and attaining key professional development goals, which include collaborating with the SEDIBA portfolio Directors, campus partners, and the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion/Vice Provost and Chief Diversity Officer (DVCDI/VPCDO) to realize the DDEEA and University's goals and objectives.
The Office of Professional Development, Education, and Innovation is housed in the DDEEA's Strategic Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging Administration portfolio. The SEDIBA portfolio also includes: the Office of Affirmative Action Planning and Programming (diversity.wisc.edu/affirmative-action-planning-programming), the Employee Disability Resources Office (employeedisabilities.wisc.edu), and the Learning Communities for Institutional Change and Excellence (LCICE) (lcice.wisc.edu). LCICE will be housed within the Office of Professional Development, Education, and Innovation.
This position reports to the Assistant Vice Provost for Strategic Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging Administration within the DDEEA.
About the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Educational Achievement (DDEEA)
Under the direction of the DVCDI/VPCDO, the Division of Diversity, Equity & Educational Achievement (DDEEA) supports the mission of the University of Wisconsin-Madison as it works to create a diverse, inclusive, and excellent learning and work environment for all students, faculty, staff, alumni, and partners at the university. The DDEEA's priorities are to increase access for underrepresented minorities in STEM; eliminate the achievement gap between majority and underrepresented students; recruit and retain a more diverse faculty and staff; prepare all of our students, staff, and faculty to thrive personally and professionally in a world that is diverse, global and interconnected; and enhance the campus climate for inclusion to ensure every constituent knows they belong. The DDEEA is comprised of administration, education, scholarship, and service programs whose work overlaps with the core values of community, inclusion, organizational excellence, transparency, accountability, and social justice. The DDEEA uses collaboration, leadership and seeding of new initiatives, consultative advice, and the coordination of numerous institutional efforts to support campus, Wisconsin, and the world.
Job Responsibilities Include:
1. Office of Professional Development, Education, and Innovation, Director: Oversight of Overall Program and Strategic Priorities
a. Work directly with the Assistant Vice Provost of Strategic Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging Administration in defining the vision and direction for the Office of Professional Development, Education, and Innovation.
b. Direct the development of long-range and short-term strategic plans for capacity building programs and resources provided by the office. Align unit objectives to ensure strategic, impactful, and effective use of financial, administrative, and staffing resources. Manage adherence to applicable regulations, guidelines, and institutional policies.
c. Define programmatic goals and ensure their proper implementation, autonomously and in collaboration with the AVP SEDIBA and DVCDI/VPCDO.
d. Oversee the creation, design, and implementation of capacity building programs, resources, and activities utilizing innovative strategies and current best practices to support the training and professional development of graduate students, faculty, and staff.
e. Develop a repository of capacity building resources to amplify trainings, resources, and activities available across campus.
f. Collaborate with relevant campus partners to develop a strategy for creating individual employee professional development plans.
g. Oversee the development and execution of graduate assistant equity workshops and professional development resources specialized for graduate assistant needs.
h. Collaborate with the Office of Strategic Diversity Planning and Research to establish an assessment and evaluation plan for the Office of Professional Development, Education, and Innovation that has clear and measurable goals.
2. In collaboration with the DDEEA and Campus-Level Leadership, assume additional duties as assigned by the DVCDI/VPCDO including but not limited to
a. Serve on various university committees and task forces, with a wide range of constituencies, including Deans, Associate Deans, Human Resources professionals, and University Leadership.
b. Serve on committees within the DDEEA.
c. Develop collegial, collaborative working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders. Partner with administrative and academic departments to gather input from key stakeholders to support the development of initiatives and trainings.
3. Personnel Management & Supervision
a. Supervise the Learning Communities for Institutional Change and Excellence, Graduate Student Learning Specialist, and Employee On-Boarding Project Program Manager.
b. Supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees.


Responsibilities:
Plans and provides direction for the administrative operations of a division or business unit(s) of the institution to advance program goals and objectives.
  • 15% Directs, implements, and monitors strategic planning initiatives to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative, and staffing resources
  • 10% Recommends, reviews, and directs personnel resource allocation to ensure appropriate utilization of resources
  • 20% Supervises managerial, professional, and support staff of the unit or division and facilitates unit staff developmental opportunities
  • 20% Serves as the unit liaison to internal and external stakeholder groups providing organizational information and representing the interests of the unit
  • 10% Develops and audits administrative operating reports, budgets, policies, and procedures to comply with regulations, institution policies, and business objectives
  • 15% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 10% Coordinate resources and strategy for building employee professional development plans connecting applicable campus-wide resources to employee needs

Qualifications:

Required:
- A minimum of three years, full-time experience directly related to the management of training/professional development programs
- Demonstrated experience managing adult professional development and training, including diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging trainings
- Demonstrated experience with diversity, equity, and inclusion teaching and learning coupled with the ability to work with individuals and groups who have varying levels of knowledge and experience within equity work
- Knowledge of current best practices and trends for professional development in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects at once. Ensuring projects stay on schedule and adhere to applicable policies
- Experience supervising full-time professional staff
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, excellent problem-solving skills, strong attention to detail, and demonstrated ability to interact professionally and build effective collaborations among colleagues from culturally diverse backgrounds
Preferred:
- Experience providing professional development resources in multiple modalities including in person, remote, working with vendors, facilitating speaker engagements, and the use of internet-based software programs for virtual learning
- Demonstrated experience managing adult professional development and training, including diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging trainings within a higher education setting
- Employ a high standard of excellence while providing and maintaining an excellent level of customer service, professionalism, and high team morale in a fast-paced working and learning environment
- Experience in higher education administration


Work Type:

Full Time: 100%
This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

Salary:

Minimum $90,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
Depending on Qualifications
The starting salary for a candidate who needs to learn the responsibilities of the position and is not yet performing the full scope of the position is between $90,000 and $95,000.
The starting salary for an experienced candidate who can fulfill most job responsibilities independently is between $95,000 and $100,000.
Actual pay is determined at hire and is based on experience and qualifications.
