Job Description Summary:

The Milken Institute School of Public Health (SPH) at the George Washington University (GW) invites applications for the position of Director, Office for Applied Public Health. The candidate who fills this position will provide leadership and operations support to the school’s applied public health activities. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Applied Public Health.
The Director, Office for Applied Public Health supports operations, polices, procedures, strategic plans, program design, training, staffing, supervision, budgets, and public relations/outreach for the Office in the following three critical areas: practice, community engagement (GWSPH Urban Health Program – DC Metro), and the Doctor of Public Health Program. The Director, Office for Applied Public Health assists the Associate Dean for Applied Public Health with representing the SPH in interactions with local, state, and national public health leaders; strengthening opportunities for applied public health training, scholarship and experience for SPH students and faculty; building and maintaining relationships with Washington D.C. Metro community health organizations; overseeing the SPH’s efforts to develop, implement, and evaluate practicum, internship, residency, and service learning activities; and supporting the Doctor of Public Health Program. Additionally, this position helps to lead and support cross-cutting practice activities related to the elevation of practice at GWSPH and support externally funded projects related to the public health workforce and other practice related projects as they are identified and funded.
The Director, Office for Applied Public Health provides support to the Office as follows:
Practice
  • Serves as SPH representative in interactions with local, state and national public health leaders.
  • Strengthens and deepens opportunities for applied public health training, scholarship and experience for SPH students and faculty.
  • Oversees the School’s efforts to develop, implement, and evaluate practicum, internship, residency, and service-learning activities.
  • Develops and coordinates practice activities and engagement with the practice community.
  • Establishes collaborations with a variety of public health and health policy partners.
  • Supports and oversees applied public health experiences for MPH students that are responsive to the Council on Education in Public Health (CEPH) guidance.
  • Improves the capacity of students to be competitive in the job market upon graduation via professional development and strategic career counseling.
  • Enhances the reputation of the school as a leader in innovative practice methods and in training future successful public health practitioners.
  • Evaluates/benchmarks and advises on improvement/adaptations to coursework and co-curricular initiatives that address new CEPH requirements, specifically including those competencies related to leadership, communication, interprofessional practice, and systems thinking.

GWSPH Urban Health Program
  • Supervises the establishment and maintenance of partnerships with organizations and key contacts committed to improving health outcomes through the Urban Health Program.
  • Supports the program manager in efforts to expand and grow the program as well as monitor and evaluate it. Growth opportunities may include efforts to identify, coordinate, implement, and pilot a menu of community engagement opportunities such as public health-related volunteer and service learning opportunities, practice experiences, internships, fellowships, trainings, projects, and academic-community partnerships.
  • Oversees all program management (evaluations, relationship building, training) and operations management (program leader supervision, budgets, financial reports, onboarding of staff, brand management, marketing, communications).

Doctor of Public Health Program
  • Supports the DrPH program director and associate director to ensure continued growth and strengthening of the program.
  • Supports the DrPH Governance Committee (admissions, curriculum, student cohorts, comprehensive exams, policy & procedure development).
  • Assures that the program is operating in accord with CEPH requirements.
  • Works closely with the DrPH program manager for quality assurance; monitors student matriculation, progress, and graduation; addresses student issues; administers policies and procedures; and oversees the development of program materials and documents.
  • Serves as a liaison with DrPH@GW third party administrator, and leading online programs and initiatives.
  • Supports the identification and onboarding of faculty for course sections and oversees scheduling of courses.
  • Meets with prospective students and helps to guide admissions for online and residential programs.
  • Leads communication strategies and new student programming opportunities.
  • Works collaboratively with the GWSPH’s PhD programs to identify and develop opportunities for leveraging resources and improving connectivity between students and faculty.
  • Advances the visibility and prominence of the School’s DrPH program as a vital source for training national and global public health leaders.

Cross-cutting Practice Initiatives
  • Leads efforts to expand practice opportunities and integrate and coordinate related work across academic departments and the school such as through the development of a practice day at the school and mapping and evaluating practice and community engagement activities and opportunities across the school.
  • Supports externally funded projects related to practice that are currently funded or support efforts to identify and apply for new funding.

The incumbent may perform other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 8 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
