Primary Purpose of Department
The mission of Facilities Management is to provide a quality learning, research, and living environment for the benefit of students, faculty, staff, and the community by planning, building, operating, and maintaining the campus of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Primary Purpose of Position
Reporting directly to the Director of Planning and Space Management, with a dotted line report to the Senior Associate Provost, the Director of University Space Management is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the UNC Charlotte integrated space management program, including the implementation of the University Policy 601.4, Integrated Space Management, to ensure that campus space is utilized efficiently and effectively, and to ensure that the allocation of all university space meets the highest and best use in the context of institutional strategic priorities. This position provides overall university space management expertise to campus constituents, oversees all collaborative efforts to execute periodic university space audits and utilization studies, is responsible for defining university space needs and priorities, and assists in various campus planning and capital improvement initiatives.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The Space Management department is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the UNC Charlotte integrated space management program. The position ensures that university space is utilized efficiently and effectively. Will ensure that the allocation of all university space meets the highest and best use in the context of institutional strategic priorities.
Minimum Education/Experience
1. A Master’s degree in building science, engineering, community/urban planning, architecture, interior architecture design, or a Bachelor’s degree and equivalent experience.
2. Six years experience in directly managing commercial and/or educational property, facilities space management, campus planning, building design, facilities management, statistical analysis, or a combination of these experiences from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
3. Demonstrated human relations, managerial/supervisory, negotiating, planning, and analytical skills are essential to this position.
4. Successful candidates will have excellent oral and written communication skills, experience working with administrative teams, experience working with diverse constituents, and demonstrated effectiveness in collaboration and team-based problem-solving.
5. Experience gathering and analyzing data; use critical thinking skills to provide context. Ability to communicate findings through reports and presentations, and make recommendations to improve space usage.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
1. Experience working in an educational/academic setting.
2. Experience using MS Office Suite; proficiency in Excel and AutoCAD along with automated facilities management system software.
3. Demonstrated experience gathering and analyzing data; using critical thinking skills to provide context. Ability to communicate findings through reports and presentations, and make recommendations to improve space usage.
Necessary Certifications/Licenses
Certification/licensure in building science, engineering, community/urban planning, architecture or interior architecture design.
Preferred Certifications/Licenses
Certification in Leadership in Energy (LEED) and Environmental Design.
Certified Planner with the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
