Director of the Chemistry Mass Spectrometry Facility

 

Required Qualifications (As evidenced by attached resume):
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in chemistry or related field.  Three [3] years of full-time experience working with instrumentation in a research/academic setting. Proficient in operating, maintaining, and repairing HPLC, GCMS and mass spectrometry equipment (MS/MS, Q-TOF, QQQ), as well as other instrumentation essential to analytical chemistry research.  Must include hands on experience across multiple instrument vendors. Experience working with graduate and undergraduate students and researchers to include mentorship and training. Ability to work in a collaborative environment and assist in designing experiments, analysis, and interpretation of data.
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD (or foreign equivalent) in Chemistry or related field. Additional years of full-time experience working with instrumentation in a research/academic setting.  Experience in proteomics, metabolomics or lipidomics. Experience with qualitative and quantitative analysis methods (analytical chemist). Additional related experience, such as a familiarity with optical-based analytical techniques relevant to biological research. Experience with collaborative, multi-PI research projects.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Director of the Chemistry Mass Spectrometry Facility is responsible for managing all facets of the operation and maintenance of the instrumentation facility within the Chemistry Department that supports the research of CASDA and ICB&DD affiliates and Chemistry Department and other SBU Research programs and collaborators.  This position will work under the guidance of the CASDA Center Director the ICB&DD Director, and the Director of Laboratories, and report to the Chair of the Chemistry Department.  The successful incumbent will have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational and time-management skills with an exceptional attention to detail.  Essential for this role is the ability to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem solving.

The Incumbent will be responsible for the following:

Designing and executing experiments in collaboration with research groups

Equipment Maintenance. Modification and upgrade of instrumentation for specialized measurements.

Training Students, postdocs, and users in general on using equipment within the facility, preparing and running samples, data collection, analysis and interpretation.  Provide expertise in conducting sophisticated analytical measurements on species including but not limited to synthetic peptides, recombinantly expressed proteins, small molecules, protein ligand complexes.

Participate in discussions with the users about sample preparation, experiment setup and data analysis, the development of experimental methods, as well as facility development and proposals.

All aspects of the operation of the mass spectrometry facility including evening/weekend response to emergency situations.  Therefore, having the ability to troubleshoot and innovate under pressure, seeing challenging problems as opportunities, and proactively pursuing solutions are imperative.

Supervision:  Supervise activities of professional staff and students.  Assist with the effective upkeep and maintenance of equipment in coordination with trained specialists from the various instrument manufacturers.  Provide instruction and mentorship in a research-based setting to on-campus users, including TA's, graduate and undergraduate students and other researchers.  

Instrumentation Facility Oversight:  Supervise the daily operations of the Instrumentation Facility to include budget management, maintaining accurate cost budget records, and remaining within cost budget allocations.

General work orders.  Maintain an organized system of work orders, logbook of jobs, and filing for future reference.

Order supplies, materials and maintain inventory.  Generate standard operating procedures as required.  Manage and schedule facility user time and user accounts. 

Maintenance of instrument usage log books and user fee records.

Generate schedules for maintenance and repair of instrumentation.

Participate in departmental Instrumentation Committee meetings and other Instrumentation Facility related departmental meetings

Maintain an efficient and safe work environment.  Respond to emergency situations within the facility as necessary.

Prepare an annual report of all Instrumentation Laboratory activities.

Instrument Oversight:  Responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of multiple HPLC, LC/MS, LC/MS/MS and GC/MS installations, among others.  Maintain excellent records of experimental methods and instrument performance (equipment usage and maintenance logs) for future reference.

Breakdown of Responsibilities:

  • Equipment Maintenance. Modification and upgrade of instrumentation for specialized measurements
  • Training. Provide expertise in conducting sophisticated analytical measurements on synthetic peptides, recombinantly expressed proteins, small molecules, and protein ligand complexes.
  • Designing and executing experiments.  Collecting and analyzing data.  Preparing analytical reports.
  • Participate in discussions with users about sample preparation, experiment setup and data analysis.  Collaborating on research proposals and facility development.
  • Supervision of one or more staff members, including an intern and a GA.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
For this position, we are unable to sponsor candidates for work visas.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,087 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
