Job Description

Friends University invites applications for a full-time faculty member to serve as Inaugural Director of the Center for Mission-Focused Teaching and Learning (CMTL).  The CMTL is a new initiative at Friends University and the Director will have a significant role in shaping the work of the CMTL.  The CMTL Director will serve as a member of the University's academic leadership team, in collaboration with the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs, and the Academic Division Chairs. The Director will lead efforts to integrate the University’s unique mission within academic programming, pedagogical approaches, and scholarship. The Director will also oversee the integration of High Impact Practices (HIPs) into the University’s academic programming, as well as promote excellent teaching in online (synchronous and asynchronous) and face-to-face modalities.  The Director will also be responsible for promoting effective cross-cultural pedagogy and providing leadership to faculty development programming.  In collaboration with the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Director promotes an academic culture that is resonant with the University's mission and integrates the unique aspects of the University’s mission within the academic enterprise.  The Director will teach a reduced courseload (to be negotiated at time of hire) in the candidate’s academic discipline.  The position will include faculty rank within one of the University’s academic divisions. EXPECTATIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful candidate will:

·         Develop and Oversee the Center for Mission-Focused Teaching and Learning

·         Facilitate the integration of the University’s unique mission within teaching and scholarship across the University

·         Lead the New Faculty Orientation program

·         Lead the First Year Seminar program

·         Provide oversight for study abroad

·         Oversee faculty development, including development of programming to foster excellent teaching (including asynchronous and synchronous online pedagogy, as well as traditional face-to-face teaching)

·         Facilitate the incorporation of High Impact Practices (HIPs) into the University’s curriculum

·         Promote research productivity appropriate to the University’s liberal arts context

·         Promote effective cross-cultural pedagogy.

·         Network with internal and external constituencies and engage in fundraising to support the work of the Center.  

·         Teach courses as appropriate to academic discipline (teaching load to be negotiated at time of hire)


Skills & Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will hold a terminal degree and have a significant amount of university-level teaching experience. The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate an ability to teach from a mission-centric perspective.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

A doctoral degree and five or more years of faculty experience are preferred.

Rank and salary are commensurate with education and experience.
