The Director of the Battelle Center is instrumental in realizing the Center's mission to provide leadership in the field of science, technology, innovation, and public policy by organizing, conducting and overseeing world class research, managing, facilitating, and participating in the delivery of quality education at the undergraduate and graduate levels in S&T policy, and developing and disseminating information on S&T issues to decision makers in the public, private and nonprofit sectors.

The Battelle Center endeavors to be a recognized leader in the science and technology policy domain and in workforce development. Center projects and programs aim to grow the Center’s capacity to impact innovation, science and technology policy and an innovative workforce, channeling talent into public service and science and technology policy domains. Center staff lead novel public interest research collaborations that address pressing societal challenges.

The Director of the Battelle Center reports to the Dean of the John Glenn College of Public Affairs to plan and coordinate the Center's activities across campus and the larger S&T community. The Director of the Battelle Center will provide leadership for the programmatic activities of the center as well as daily management of the center's fiscal and staff resources. The Director consults regularly with the Dean, Associate Dean for Faculty & Research, and Chief Administrative Officer to set and evaluate the Center's strategic and programmatic direction and financial position; generate external resources to support the mission and programs of the Battelle Center; execute and implement the Battelle Center's strategic plan and programs and independently sustain the center; collaborate with faculty, staff and students of the Glenn College and other Ohio State offices and academic units that have research and programs that relate to the Center's mission; publicize and promote the Center's events and activities on campus, nationally and internationally; and, contribute to the success of the Glenn College's academic programs; and periodically coordinate with Battelle Memorial Institute to pursue combined activities between the research nonprofit and the university. This position is at-will and its continuation is contingent upon the ongoing successful achievement of the position's performance goals and requirements, most importantly securing funding to independently sustain the Center’s direct and indirect research and administrative outlays.

Duties Description

Generate external resources to support the mission and programs of the Battelle Center; execute and implement the Battelle Center's strategic plan and programs.

Consult regularly with the Glenn College Dean, Associate Dean for Faculty and Research, Chief Administrative Officer, and advisory bodies to set and evaluate the Center's strategic and programmatic direction and ensure productive information exchanges related to center strategy, budget, finances, personnel, and other center administrative activities and operations; collaborate with faculty, staff and students of the Glenn College and other Ohio State offices and academic units that have programs that relate to the Center's mission;

Publicize and promote the Center's events and activities on campus, nationally and internationally; contribute to the success of the Glenn College's academic programs; Periodically coordinate with Battelle Memorial Institute to pursue combined activities between the research nonprofit and the university.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in a field related to science, technology, and/or public policy.  Advanced degree may be required. 7 years of relevant experience required.

Desired Qualifications

Doctoral degree in a field related to science, technology and/or public policy is preferred.   Demonstrated 10-15 years of experience leading research and/or academic programs that produce insights for decision makers, generating funds (e.g., grants, contracts) to support existing or new programmatic efforts, and managing budgets and personnel. Demonstrated knowledge about current public policy issues relating to science, technology, and/or the engineering field.
