Position Summary
The Director of Systems & Strategic Analysis reports to the Assistant Vice Provost for Admissions & Aid and is a member of the Admissions & Aid leadership plus team overseeing the admissions system, Slate, and technology resources across the unit. Additionally, the director leads research and strategic analysis for Admissions, aid, and the WashU College Prep Program (CPP).


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities


Directs the admissions technology efforts including overseeing the admissions CRM, Slate to provide support for undergraduate admissions, the WashU College Prep Program, and a number of pre-college and undergraduate programs in various departments across the university.

  • Focuses on strategic planning for all technology needs within the admissions office to ensure the staff has access to strategic tools that make work efficient and effective. Researches and identifies new tools.
  • Directs efforts of the Associate Director: Admissions Systems & Integration who oversees the team that completes the day-to-day work on admissions systems and technology including:
    • Constant, ongoing build and maintenance of the Slate system throughout the admissions and enrollment cycle. Creating queries and reports needed to extract data from Slate that is used to communicate with prospective students, families, and counselors.
    • Managing all data imports and exports within the admissions system.
    • Creating queries and dashboards that are used by all staff in admissions and other campus partners as necessary.
    • Collaborates with the Enrollment Planning and Selections Teams to identify and implement yearly cycle changes.
  • Ensures that the technology team focuses on efficient processes across all areas of admissions.
  • Works with the Workday Student team to support the implementation and integration of the new system as it relates to Undergraduate Admissions and all non-graduate students entering WashU.
  • Works with vendors and WUIT to make sure all admissions data is secure and handled in a confidential manner.

Manages the Strategic Analysis team to:

  • Conducts analysis of data to provide actionable insights and strategic pathways for enrollment including recruitment, financial aid, scholarships, and retention.
  • Leads team in analyzing national and university-specific trends and patterns and visualizing and communicating insights to stakeholders. Connects dots from data to developing strategies.
  • Ensures that all divisional team members have access to accurate timely data to make data-driven decisions. For example, using data analysis to identify recruitment opportunities and areas of concentration for recruitment staff and developing assessment programs so staff continually assess, improve recruitment and yield programs and activities.
  • Sets the research agenda for the unit, working with the Leadership Team, to ensure an on-going commitment to understanding and evaluating our work. Advises on market research to understand the admissions and aid landscape and Washington University’s perception and place in the market.
  • Manages the relationship with key external research partners with whom we collaborate to project and model our recruitment funnel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree with seven years of significant experience.
  • Background in IT.
  • Experience in systems and process improvements.
  • Direct experience developing and implementing strategies to achieve institutional objectives.
  • Exceptional communication, organizational, management, and supervisory skills.
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal and leadership skills.
  • Ability to lead teams of individuals from diverse backgrounds and areas of expertise.
  • Critical judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Deep understanding of skill, experience, and interest in data analytics, visualizing data, and using data to inform decisions. Using statistics in everyday work.
  • Skill and interest in identifying and using cutting-edge technologies.
  • Understanding of the student recruitment and admissions process in order to provide system support and strategic direction.
  • Demonstrates understanding of admissions technical systems.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to quickly analyze situations and problems and generate effective solutions.
  • Able to innovate and think creatively.
  • Ability to convey plans, actions, and directions effectively to all levels of staff.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in data science, Information Systems or related specialty area.
  • At least five years of significant experience in admission, higher education, or specialty area.

Salary Range
$82,500.00 - $145,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
