Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit | Through research, teaching and public service, graduate education creates knowledge that leads to innovative solutions to address critical societal needs. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill offers more than 80 programs that grant more than 160 graduate degrees and graduate students make up nearly 30% of enrolled students at UNC-Chapel Hill. The Graduate School of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill provides leadership to envision, shape and support the highest quality education for a diverse community of graduate students whose contributions will have global impact. Drawing on best practices gleaned from graduate educators throughout the country, The Graduate School models the inclusive and equitable policies and practices that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill strives to instill in every unit, department, and program at this great University. The Graduate School supports graduate students in almost every program across the Carolina campus and serves students from admission through graduation. We provide financial support (e.g. interdisciplinary fellowships, tuition support, travel awards, and research supplements), career and professional development (e.g. in pedagogy, leadership, communication, grant writing), diversity and student success programming, academic program support, and advocacy to students, faculty, staff, and graduate programs. The Graduate School also provides individual students with services tailored to meet their needs. |
Position Summary | This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station. The Director of Student Success plays a crucial role in orchestrating and overseeing a broad spectrum of student-centered initiatives within The Graduate School to advance overall student success. The Student Success Program stands as a dynamic and comprehensive endeavor, with a primary focus on supporting the diverse graduate student community. Its efforts are geared towards bolstering retention rates, promoting wellness, and facilitating timely degree completion for students from varied backgrounds. In close collaboration with stakeholders across the UNC campus and beyond, the Director of Student Success ensures the effective delivery of programming and outreach efforts. To maximize the effectiveness of these efforts, the Director actively nurtures existing partnerships while also spearheading the development of innovative initiatives, all with a holistic perspective on student achievement. This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of students and contribute to the overall success of the institution. The Director of Student Success will play a key role in shaping the student experience and fostering a culture of excellence, support, and achievement. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements | Bachelor’s degree and three years of experience in the area of assignment, of which at least one is supervisory or in a lead-worker capacity; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | -Experience leading teams and managing projects and programming initiatives for a student community. -Candidates should have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience | -Experience working in higher education, preferably in a role related to student success, such as academic advising, student services, or retention. -Experience with graduate student populations. -Strong customer service orientation and be able to work with students, faculty, and staff in a helpful and supportive manner. -PhD preferred. |

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities | This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
