Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Position Summary
The Director of Student Services manages the student services functions of the Office of Student Development at UNC School of Law. Along with the Assistant Dean for Student Development and Director for Pro Bono Initiatives, the Director of Student Services provides strategic direction for the Office of Student Development. The Office of Student Development is an integral part of co-curricular and community life at the law school.
The Director of Student Services supervises the activities, leadership training, and financial management of more than 50 student organizations; guides a large and active Student Bar Association (SBA); develops student leadership programs and trainings; wellness initiatives, plans and coordinates the annual commencement; plans and coordinates new student orientation for incoming students; supervises the peer-to-peer (the Dean’s Fellows Program) advising program for students; oversees the programming of the Chancellors Scholars program (highest merit academic scholarship); provides support for all student organizations, including our affinity organizations; and develops and manages programs that promote a sense of community and furthers the institution’s mission.
The Director works with the Associate Dean for Equity, Admissions, and Student Affairs to contribute to the establishment and implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion programming and pipeline development. Director also works with the Office of Communications to create messaging that supports student programming and other initiatives. The Director assists the Assistant Dean for Student Development in administering examinations and implementing accommodations and completes other administrative duties for the Office of Student Development as assigned. This position reports directly to the Assistant Dean for Student Development.
This position will Student/Student Group Advising, Training, and Advocacy Performance Standards: Advises the Student Bar Association and its weekly meetings, advocacy and activities. Acts as a liaison between students and the law school and university administration regarding student life issues. Leads the law school peer advisor program, the Dean’s Fellows Program, including training and supervising 40+ upperclass peer advisors for 1L students and transfer students in onboarding and mentoring students during their first year of law school.
Leads and directs program development and student support for the Chancellors Scholars Program, the highest merit scholarship student group including faculty mentoring program and Chancellors Scholars Enrichment Fund. Provides strategic guidance to individual student organizations, including programming, financial guidance, that promotes community building Navigates complex issues that may arise with programs or conflicts within or across student organizations. Student Development team primary point of contact for professional development and leadership training for student organization leaders.
Provides support to the members and leaders of the school’ s affinity student organizations, representing students from historically under-represented backgrounds, including roundtables, faculty mentorship series, alumni connections, etc. Supports individual students with student life-related concerns.
This position also oversees the fiscal management of the student organization council, commencement and orientation budgets and has general supervisory responsibility for the budgets and financial training of the Student Bar Association and 50+ student organizations including academic journals and competitive moot court and trial teams, who receive student fees and endowment funds. They will serve as the point of contact for student organization policies and communications, including communications with faculty advisors including leading and managing the Student Activity Fee Budget and oversees the committee.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required (or foreign degree equivalent); for candidates demonstrating comparable independent educational or instructional activities associated with the delivery and/or management of student support functions, will accept a relevant Bachelor’s degree (or foreign degree equivalent) and at least 1 year of relevant experience in substitution.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Sophisticated working knowledge of the legal profession and legal education. Experience with database management. Excellent communication, marketing, interpersonal, and organizational abilities. Ability to interface and effectively maintain relationships with multiple constituencies. Ability to work independently in high visibility and high stress situations. Ability to make presentations before varied audiences around the country.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Three or more years of admissions and/or student affairs experience preferred.
JD. Professional experience with diversity and inclusion initiatives.
Experience with PeopleSoft, Slate, Microsoft 365.

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
