Job Summary

In 1996, the University of California San Francisco was designated as a National Center of Excellence (NCoE) in Women’s Health through a competitive process with the federal office of Health and Human Services Office of Women’s Health. UCSF was one of the inaugural six academic medical centers awarded this designation to establish an innovative interdisciplinary model of advancing women’s health and transforming women’s lives through sex and gender focus. We defined our model of transformative change with pillars: research, innovative clinical care, education & training, leadership, and respectful community engagement.

Over the past twenty-seven years, the NCoE has seen enormous success in a variety of programs and services. Essentially, the NCoE:

  • Runs programs: Women’s Health Primary Care, Young Women’s Health & Leadership Program, facility, Black Women’s Health & Livelihood Initiative
  • Funds initiatives that advance women’s health: UCSF RAP Research Funding, New Generation Health Center, Gender Affirming Health Program
  • Incubates and supports programs & women’s health champions: Women’s Health Undergraduate Research Internship, Patient Navigator, Centering Pregnancy, ANSIRH, Women’s HIV Program
  • Convenes thought leaders: UCSF Women’s leadership retreat, first international conference on the intersection of domestic violence and sex trafficking with Futures without Violence, National CoE Academic Community Partnership Program

The NCoE needs a Director of Strategic Initiatives to lead in assessing what programs are now most needed and where we will be most effective. The five pillars that frame the work are still important to advance women’s health. In addition, the core values of the NCoE including collaboration, equity and justice, a sex and gender focus, and inclusivity continue to be essential and remain core to our work. The current key programmatic areas of the NCoE include the Black Women’s Health & Livelihood Initiative, the UCSF RAP Research Funding, the Serenity Art Series, and addressing Anti-Racism in our work, within our culture, and within our structure at UCSF.

The Director of Strategic Initiatives will help build a solid strategic plan for the NCoE through a two stage process that includes: stage 1: comprehensive participatory process that includes a review of the organization’s history, interviews with current leadership team, staff and key stakeholders and overall assessment through gap or SWOT analysis; research of the level of need for the NCoE within UCSF, the community and the Nation and an analysis of any areas where services/programs/initiatives provide overlap with those provided by other organizations; benchmarking the UCSF NCoE with other similar NCoE with similar focus; interviews, surveys and focus group polling to receive partner and community input; stage 2: planning & creation of a strategic plan with goals and actionable objectives, strategies & tactics.

This is a one-year contract position. Work will be both onsite (Mt. Zion location) and remote; subject to change based on manager discretion and/or business need.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.
