Position Information


Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
Campus Health (CH) is a multi-specialty ambulatory college health clinic providing quality, and affordable health care for eligible students and spouses. Annually, CH has more than 80,000 patient encounters, which includes Primary Care and Women’s Health as well as specialty clinics in sports medicine, orthopedics, gynecology, physical therapy, counseling and psychological services, travel clinic and allergy clinic. Weekend acute care is provided from 8-5 PM. On site ancillary services include pharmacy, OTC pharmacy, Student Stores pharmacy, medical laboratory, and radiology.
Campus Health has been continuously accredited since 1986 by the Joint Commission of Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. All personnel are trained in the concepts and principles of Performance Improvement and serve as team members and leaders in shaping and defining the organization as it strives to provide quality and safe care.
Campus Health collaborates with Student Wellness and Campus Recreation and other Student Affairs partners to provide education and outreach to assist in keeping the campus population healthy.
Education and research comprise another important function of CH. CH provides clinical rotations and practicums for students in the School of Education, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work and Public Health, Department of Medical Technology, Physical Therapy, Occupational Health and Radiology. In addition, CH serves as a research site for a number of faculty and graduate student grants and contracts, where CH staff participates with the principal investigators across a variety of medical specialties.
Position Summary
The Director of Sports Nutrition and Head Dietician for Football will provide individual and group team sports nutrition counseling and education to enhance the health and performance of all students, including varsity and non-varsity athletes. The Dietician will primarily serve the football team but also supervise and manage full time dieticians and temporary staff providing services to all other sports. The position is primarily responsible for nutrition assessment and counseling; translating the latest scientific evidence into practical sports nutrition recommendations; tracking and documenting outcomes of nutrition services; serving as a food and nutrition resource for coaches, foodservice staff, the sports medicine team, and athletic administration; providing sports nutrition education for UNC athletic teams; and participating in the teaching activities of the Sports Medicine Department; directs program projects and delegates responsibilities to second sports nutritionist, interns and volunteers. The position requires strong clinical skills in the areas of diabetes, hypertension, lipid management, eating disorders, weight management, and other MNT diagnoses; as well as a sound knowledge of performance enhancement principles and strategies. Certification as a CSSD or willingness to obtain certification is highly desirable. In addition, the Director of Sports Nutrition for Football will participate in clinical teaching and instruction of allied health students affiliated with the Sports Medicine program and where appropriate, participate in research activities carried out by the department.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with at least 1 year of experience in relevant independent instructional or educational activities; specific minimum experience is at the discretion of the Director of Athletics.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Applicant must be a Registered Dietitian (RD) with active status and have or be eligible for North Carolina licensure. Must be credentialed as a Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD). Must maintain membership in appropriate professional organizations (ADA, SCAN, CPSDA) and obtains continuing education credits to maintain appropriate certifications (RD, CSSD, LDN). Minimum of five years experience working as a dietitian, preferably with the college-aged population and or athletes in collegiate environment. Sound clinical nutrition skills and strong background in sports nutrition and or exercise physiology needed.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Excellent computer, presentation, organizational and time management skills necessary. The successful candidate should be self motivated and have ability to work independently. Should have knowledge of eating disorder signs, symptoms, and treatments; anthropometric measurements; food service quality and safety procedures; and rules and regulations of athletic governing bodies.
