Department Information

The University of Cincinnati Department of Athletics competes at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics with the vision to reach Next Level Success for all 18 varsity teams and more than 500 student-athletes. The Bearcats have a proud athletics history, winning eight national championships and 117 conference titles. The Cincinnati men's basketball team is among the 15 winningest programs all-time, while the football team became the first American Athletic Conference program to compete in the College Football Playoff in 2021. Olympic gold medalist volleyball player Jordan Thompson, NBA Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson and Major League Baseball legend Sandy Koufax are among the several luminaries who have competed as Bearcats.

Job Overview

The University of Cincinnati (UC), Department of Athletics seeks applications for a Director of Sports Nutrition (Sports Nutrition Specialist) to oversee sport nutrition department and staff. This is a full-time position, salaried, with a comprehensive benefits package.  

 

The successful candidate will serve as Sports Nutrition liaison for student-athletes, coaches, and peers through counseling, planning, monitoring and documentation of performance based nutritional practices while following University of Cincinnati and departmental policies, NCAA Division I, and Conference bylaws and regulations.  

 


Essential Functions
  • Provide individual nutritional counseling aimed towards optimal nutrition for sport.
  • Counsel student-athletes about performance-based nutrition focused on weight management, recovery, hydration, travel disordered eating, and supplementation. 
  • Counsel student-athletes about specific nutritional challenges for performance such as food allergies, recovery from injury, and dietary disturbances. 
  • Educate student-athletes, coaches and staff through departmental programming on student-athlete nutritional competencies.
  • Assess and analyze dietary practices, body composition, and energy availability for athletic competition.
  • Collaborate with Sports Medicine and Sports Performance to ensure a multi-disciplinary approach for student-athlete health and wellness. 
  • Evaluate nutritional supplements for legality, safety, quality, and efficacy. 
  • Manages and coordinate menus and dining hall operations in conjunction with food service staff. 
  • Manage Sports Nutrition budget and assist with fuel station purchases. 
  • Assist with travel recommendations for sports. 
  • Maintain up to date on all current nutrition related research. 
  • May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.). 

 


Required Education

Bachelor's Degree in clinical utrition, health/exercise science or nutrition/dietetics field.


Required Trainings/Certifications
  • Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) with active status through the Commission on Dietetic Registration required
  • Certificate/Licensure as required by the State of Ohio – must be achieved within six (6) months of hire.

Required Experience

Two (2) years of related experience.


Additional Qualifications Considered
  • Board Certified as a Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD)
  • Masters degree in clinical nutrition, health/exercise science, nutrition/dietetics field or sports administration.
  • Ability to travel with teams. Some nights and weekends may be required.

 


Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Office environment/no specific unusual physical or environmental demands.
