Job Description

Plans, directs and manages the Safety in the Built Environment and Sustainable Resource Conservation programs and will develop, maintain and promote policies, procedures and programs to ensure compliance with regulations, laws and regulatory agencies. Works to establish the strategic direction for the Safety in the Built Environment team.  Reports to Assistant Vice President.

Essential Duties

  • Directs the Safety in the Built Environment program on a daily basis for all locations including all activities associated with environmental management and facility safety programs.
  • Directs the Sustainable Resource Conservation team to ensure compliance with federal, state and local air quality, hazardous waste, and greenhouse gas reporting requirements for the campus community.
  • Directs the Spill Prevention Control and Counter measures program, wastewater permitting program, underground storage tank program, and storm water management program.
  • Directs the EHS Emergency Response Team to provide 24/7 emergency response.
  • Represents EHS on the University Operations Committee and may serve as an Incident Commander for hazardous materials incidents.
  • Directs the asbestos, lead, mold and environmental abatement and remediation programs for ASU buildings.
  • Responsible for the implementation of policies, procedures and systems relating to air and water quality, wastewater and sewer, hazardous waste and facilities safety to maintain and enhance safety and environmental performance of the organization.
  • Directs audits of facility-related safety programs and controls significant loss producing exposures.
  • Directs programs and procedures to ensure the safety of university staff working with electrical, explosive, high-pressure construction and other facility-related hazards.
  • Collaborates with contractors and consultants on construction projects evaluating alternative approaches and taking action to correct problems or to ensure environmental quality and compliance.
  • Oversees the review of planned facility expansions, modifications or closures, which affect environmental discharges, emissions, and hazardous materials.
  • Conducts independent research on the organizations environmental reporting requirements to establish a basis for program changes and improvement.
  • Coordinates across all university departments in the installation and maintenance of environmental compliance measures required under Federal, State, and local regulations.
  • Recommends cost effective measures for air and waste quality, sustainable resources, and other environmental compliance opportunities in existing facilities, construction, and renovation projects.
  • Determines the need for ecological screening studies for potential sites; studies the ecological character of the sites to address concerns of various environmental and regulatory agencies.
  • Interprets and applies technical regulatory requirements for construction and renovation projects.
  • Interfaces with industry and environmental groups and regulatory agencies to keep current on the changes developing in the regulations and legislation.
  • Stays abreast on all existing and proposed changes in environmental and facilities safety regulations.
  • Serves as a liaison for external agencies and organizations (e.g., Air Force) for environmental compliance matters.
  • Serves as Polytechnic CAP Coordinator for ASU, ADEQ and USEPA.
  • Serves as Real Estate Transaction Coordinator for environmental site assessments and other environmental matters.
  • Directs and coaches staff to ensure ongoing effective, high quality delivery of services and programs; determines and takes appropriate performance management steps including separation of employment.
  • Participates in planning, developing and administering department budget.
  • Serves on university wide committees and collaborates internally and externally with content experts to develop best practices.
  • Conducts and assists with the development of long- and short-range goals.
  • Assists with evaluating goal effectiveness.
  • Develops strategic objectives in collaboration with other unit leaders.
  • Responsible for cross-training staff for succession planning.
  • This position will not oversee the Associate Director of Semiconductor Operations at MacroTechnology Works but will provide input and guidance.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Public Health, Environmental Health and Science, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or other field appropriate to the area of assignment AND eight (8) years of related administrative experience, which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Twelve (12) years of related administrative experience, which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved. Possession of a current Arizona drivers license is required upon employment

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse
  • Required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Works in highly dangerous areas with uncontained or spilled hazardous materials.
