Job Description:

The State University of New York at Old Westbury seeks an innovative leader for the position of Director of Residential Life and Senior Class Dean.  In an environment that cultivates critical thinking, empathy, creativity and intercultural understanding, the Director will lead our efforts to foster an inclusive, supportive, educational, and formative environment supportive of the College's mission.  The Office of Residential Life oversees accommodations ranging from traditional residence halls to suite style housing.  Located on a picturesque 604-acre campus on Long Island, just 20 miles from the center of Manhattan, the College at Old Westbury offers the best of both worlds.  This is a full-time, twelve (12) month position with the opportunity for on campus housing (2-bedroom apartment with independent, external entrance).

Responsibilities:

Director of Residential Life:

  • Provide vision, leadership and strategic direction to the Office of Residential Life.
  • Supervise professional staff, including the Assistant Director for Residential Life, Assistant Director for Student Conduct, and 3-5 Residence Hall Directors.
  • Manage a complex budget and ensure financial responsibility for the department.
  • Oversee residential contracts, policy development and facilities concerns.
  • Run departmental assessment, develop and track short- and long-term student learning outcomes, and implement data driven changes.
  • Serve in an on-call rotation for campus emergency/campus crisis management.
  • Develop strong partnerships throughout the campus community.
  • Ensure a high-quality residential experience for students.
  • Perform duties of a conduct officer as needed.

Senior Class Dean:

The Class Dean is responsible for a comprehensive program of class support and caring for each student, exercising leadership and collaboration to strengthen support and resources for students, and actively supporting the college-wide priority of improving student retention and graduation rates.  The Class Dean collaborates with faculty, staff, students, and community members to support equitable, inclusive, and sustainable learning environments.  The Class Dean works closely with campus offices, including but not limited to: Academic Departments, Academic Advising, Student Affairs, Counseling/Student Health Services, Student Conduct, the Registrar, Financial Aid, Bursar, Study Abroad, Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Student Success Centers to both inform and enhance resources and services in support of student learning and engagement. 

  • Develops programming and provides resources to all Old Westbury Seniors in support of their academic success, to ensure students are on track for major and minor course completion. 
  • Focus on students' co-curricular leadership experience and exploration with regard to term Study Abroad, Peer Leadership opportunities, internships, and experiential learning. 
  • Ensures that Senior students are fully informed about and supported through available resources and opportunities, including fellowships, study abroad programs and career placement and development.  
  • Works collaboratively with departmental and program leadership, college advisors and faculty on student academic progression, completion and student concerns. 
  • Serves as an important resource for faculty in support of advising and student success. 
  • Liaises with key offices and administrative units across the university to ensure that Seniors are informed of and supported by various policies and procedures. 
  • Responds to regular inquiries from students, parents, faculty, and other administrators with regard to academic and student life related issues for Seniors, in accordance with FERPA guidelines. 
  • Participates in ongoing processes of assessing and revising student retention and completion efforts. 
  • Contributes to the effectiveness of academic advising and student support through team-based work with other class deans and academic department. 
  • Represents the College at various evening and weekend events as requested. 
  • Keep current trends and best practices in advising, retention, student development, and student success. 
  • Serve on the Behavioral Assessment Team. 
  • Assist in the planning and execution of transfer student orientation. 
  • Represent the senior class in commencement celebrations, commencement, and collaboration with alumni affairs.  
  • Collaborate in the development of Living Learning Communities
  • Serve as a liaison to resources for pre-professional and graduate school opportunities and preparation.  
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration or related discipline.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience as a full-time Residential Life professional.
  • Demonstrated experience with responding and strategizing response to campus crisis and emergencies.
  • Demonstrated experience with student development, programming and staff supervision and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge and experience in the supervision and training of professional and paraprofessional staff.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and program development as applied to Residential Life education and programming.
  • Knowledge of student learning outcomes development and the assessment of student learning and residential programs.
  • Strong presentation abilities, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and a commitment to the well-being and development of a diverse student population.
  • Ability to work effectively and ethically with a diverse population of students, faculty/administrators, and community partners.
  • Ability to adapt, work under deadlines and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Proven skills in project management, organization, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends when necessary.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience supervising employees in a unionized environment.
  • Working knowledge and experience in the administration of Title IX, VAWA and other sexual misconduct policies.
  • Working knowledge of Ellucian Banner, The Housing Director, and Maxient software.
