Director of Research, Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER)

The position directs a high-visibility applied economic research program with a focus on the regional economy.  The broad areas of research would include, but not be limited to, industries relevant to Montana and the mountain west, such as tourism, manufacturing, high tech, energy and health care. The incumbent is expected to conduct peer-reviewed and client-specific applied research and to communicate findings to the public in non-technical language, including presentations at the Montana Economic Outlook Seminars. They must be able to attract grants, contracts and other outside funding and direct the development of the overall research program, working with others in the BBER in a collaborative manner. 

The position also directs the health care research program at the BBER, and, as such, is responsible for its direction and growth. The hiring and supervision of additional staff that can be supported by the income stream of that program is completely consistent with this role.

The BBER is the preeminent business research center in Montana. Housed in the College of Business, for 46 years it has produced the Montana Economic Outlook Seminar, a half-day program devoted to the national, state and local economic outlook that is held in 9 cities across Montana. The Director of Research serves as Associate Director of the BBER, and has an important role in the strategic direction of the center.

Position Details:
  • Position is full-time, 1.0 FTE, MUS Contract and includes a comprehensive and competitive benefits package including Insurance package, mandatory retirement plan, partial tuition waiver, and wellness program
  • Salary for this position is $115,000- $124,000 per year commensurate with qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • The position requires either a Ph.D. in economics or a related field as well as 5 years of experience in applied economic research in a leadership role
  • The position requires independence, initiative, leadership, communications, and persistence
  • The incumbent must be thoroughly trained in economics and familiar with health care policy and the issues involved

Preferred Qualifications:
  • The ideal candidate has a demonstrated capacity to independently direct and grow a high-visibility research program, including the ability to conduct peer-reviewed research, attract grants and other external funding, and to make non-technical public presentations of research findings
  • The ability to manage all aspects of a research program, including budgets and personnel, research development and strategic planning, is central to this position
