Job Summary/Basic Function
About This Role:
The Director of Recreational Sports leads the department within the Division of Student Engagement. This role requires comprehensive leadership skills, overseeing both professional and student staff, financial savvy, risk management and facility management, strategic planning and fostering collaborative relationships both on campus and in the community. The director will play a pivotal role in advancing the mission of the division and the university through increased student engagement, retention and overall student success.
What You’ll Do:

  • Responsible for the overall administration, organization, and daily operation of a comprehensive Recreational Sports program on a university campus.
  • Supervises day-to-day operations of all Rec. Sports areas which include recreation operations, fitness, cheer, dance, outdoor pursuits, intramurals, club sports, and aquatics.
  • Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises all professional, student and adjunct staff.
  • Responsible for oversight of all Rec Sports areas and facilities to include access control, risk management, operational hours, preventative maintenance, equipment purchases and facility maintenance and upkeep.
  • Determine needs, establish goals, evaluate programs, and set direction for departmental program growth.
  • Develops, maintains, and ensures compliance with all departmental and university policies.
  • Prepares and monitors monthly, quarterly, and annual departmental budgets, travel, and facility utilization statistics.
  • Collaborate with other university departments to provide recruitment opportunities and enhance university growth.
  • Maintain active involvement in national organizations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Key Competencies:

  • Knowledge of programming for students, faculty, staff and effective facility utilization.
  • Knowledge of campus recreation software programs.
  • Knowledge of the management and operation of recreation facilities and equipment.
  • Ability to design, market, and manage fitness center and campus recreation programs.
  • Ability to develop and implement growth and marketing strategies, which include web management, in all areas of recreational sports.
  • Demonstrate the ability to responsibly oversee multiple budgets.
  • Ability to manage students as employees while supporting their growth as students in understanding their difficulties and helping them find solutions.
  • Evidence of a high degree of personal and professional integrity, interpersonal communication and human relation skills.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Recreation Management, Kinesiology, Sports Management, or related field
  • Five (5) yrs. Professional experience at a college or university in recreation which includes wellness, fitness, outdoor pursuits, aquatics, intramurals, and cheer/dance.
  • Current First Aid, CPR and AED certification.
  • Demonstrated experience in working independently with professional staff, student staff and faculty.
  • Excellent leadership, organization, interpersonal and oral/written/presentation skills.
  • Demonstrate ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends.
  • Experience with marketing, team building and hands on staff development.
